Today I got a new distributor cap and rotor arm, brought them back and fitted them and, ... nothing.
So I started digging down a bit, checked the fuel again, checked it was pumping, it was, even though it's not wetting the plugs. So while they were out I tried setting the points gap, and checking the continuity. I did notice that while the points were closed, it wasn't making a circuit to the other side of where the gap would be, which seemed weird. Having managed to find a way to turn the engine manually I figured I'd swap the points as we had a spare, and that was it. Once I'd put a new set in, gapped them, it sprang into life. And looking at the old ones in the light, there's quiet a chunk missing from the contact on the fixed side, so that can't have helped.
Thanks for the suggestions everyone, and I wish I'd checked the points in more detail before. In my defence, I don't have points on my car so I was putting them off. |

Hi Mike
I think it's the 3rd check in the Crypton test sequence; " volt drop across the points".
It's allways worth going back to basic training !
Good result
Cheers
