Aft'noon folks,

A minor TV celebrity now, in the faded black form of an Austin FL1 hearse regularly seen on Heartbeat.

Several of the cars that were often shown parked alongside the garage were left to rot. The FL1, while looking like it needs fettling back to life, has at least survived in better condition than the others.

But, would you buy a hearse?

There is an active (is that the right word?) club for them. See here:-

They are classified by make, and we quite often see then here for the 24-Hour race. I remember one where the coffin was actually a fridge for the beer!

I would buy one.

I had an amusing experience back in 1965. There was a combined Veteran Car Club and Vintage Car Club gathering in Mornington, a country town about 35 miles from Melbourne. Not owning a V or V car,. I opted to be a marshal, using my 'modern' a 1939 Series E Morris.

After attending the event and helping where I could, I set off to another town to visit friends. Unfortunately only about ten miles on that journey, the Morris failed with head gasket problems. We were now a considerable distance from home, and well away from any public transport.

My friend and I asked at a farmhouse and then pushed the car there to store it until I could fix it. I asked to use the telephone, and rang the police station at Morninton. After explaining our problem, the Sargent said "there goes one of the cars now, just a minute". When he returned to the phone, he explained that he had sent a vehicle to pick us up and bring us back to the event. I was puzzled by the obvious mirth in his voice.

The vehicle, when it arrived was a 1926 Austin hearse. Graeme and I lay in the back, and when we got to the Mornington venue, the owner, opened the back and dragged his two passengers out one by one. It created quite a stir!

Going back to Rick's original comment, several of the Heartbeat vehicles have come to the market in recent years, in very poor condition and I wonder why. Did no one realise the "celebrity" status of these vehicles when the show ended?

But, would you buy a hearse?

Only if it had a good body!

According to eBay this has been lost, but if you were dead set (pun intended) on a hearse, here's another one!
