Thoughts of "Genevieve" and the competition.

Thanks Ray. Most interesting.
I was quite intrigued with the method of building the wheels- a built up felloe and dowelled spokes is something that I have never seen before, but then I have only seen wood spoked wheels for horse-drawn vehicles in Oz and USA style ones for cars, both using similar methods, quite different from in the film. When the car is driven towards the camera, I believe that both front wheels are a little out of true.
Apart from that, a wonderful restoration. _________________ Dane- roverdriver but not a Viking. |

They trued up the wheels as well as they could but the rim that was shown was bent. It really needed a blacksmith to straighten the rims so as to do the wheels justice. After all that work and attention to detail it must have been frustrating to have such an obvious wheel wobble. Also, the n/s rear tyre was virtually flat!.
I have not had personal experience with beaded edge tyres but I understand they are pumped up to at least 60 psi and can be very expensive.
Yes, Peter. You are of course right to mention the film 'Genevieve' as the 'other' car was a Spyker.
I still kick myself when I think how close I came recently to buying a 1902 steam car. It had been a Brighton runner but is currently a non runner. I listened to my other half who convinced me that I know very little about steam cars and would regret it. The price reflected the amount of work required but I now wish I had taken it on. |
