I would presume that close to 100% of OCC members have a motor vehicle and therefore travel around.
Calls of nature are just that, and as one gets older the calls may become more frequent and notification may come upon us a little quicker than in the days gone by.
This BBC article looks at the demise of the "Public Convenience"
http://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-36424863
Anyone who lives or makes visits to the North American continent may have been surprised at the difference in attitude with regard to (Toilets - Conveniences - Rest Rooms - Washrooms) The likes of McDonalds, Burger King and a host of other fast food outlets all provide washrooms, as do the large chains such as Walmart, Sears and many more. Gas/Petrol Stations also have them. The difference between here and the UK, is the fact that over here one is not obliged to buy something.
Overall, the facilities and cleanliness is good, well maybe not in downtown Miami, where one may have to do a dance around the used hypo needles.
Interstates have rest stops and all the facilities, most are OK.
Visitors to England can and often are shocked and disgusted at the quality of these services, especially Council maintained venues.
So.... should stores and gas stations around the UK start to provide these services ? and what good - bad - amusing situations have OCC members experienced, anywhere ? |

The British Penny
The British Penny European Union Directive No. 456179
In order to bring about further integration with the single European currency, the Euro, all citizens of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and
Northern Ireland must be made aware that the phrase "Spending a Penny" is not to be used after 31 May 2016.
From this date forward, the correct term will be: "Euronating".
It is hoped that this will be a great relief to everyone. If you have any
questions, just give me a tinkle. _________________ Dane- roverdriver but not a Viking. |

The US national parks seem to be studded with these..
They have dry toilets with a very deep (at least 6 ft) and draughty hole beneath the seat.

Almost all towns in Western Australia have public conveniences and generally speaking, they are clean and well kept. All shopping centres, garages and fast food outlets also have public conveniences.
Therefore when I visit the UK it comes as a rude shock when I need, like most men of my age, to find relief. Public conveniences have just about dissapeared! In the country I have had to resort to the old trick of pulling into a layby facing against the traffic and opening both the driving and passenger doors before welcome relief! However, this is not really an option for my long suffering wife!

There is an the Alternative Technology Centre near Corris between Dolgellau and Machynlleth in North Wales. It is run by ecologically aware people (obvious really) many of whom are highly qualified academics.
The attraction is meant to be self sustaining/sufficient and a friend of mine with her husband and two children spent an interesting day there a few years ago.
They ate at the onsite cafe/restaurant and enjoyed a vegetarian meal which was delicious. Everything was grown at the centre but the earth toilet facilities were a novelty to them. It was only on their way home and reading the brochures that they realised that everything was used or reused to provide compost for the vegetable gardens.
They all had to get out of the car for a minute or two................. _________________ Starting Handle Expert

Now you know why garden centres are so full of pensioners, they're all in search of a loo! It's only after being diagnosed with prostate cancer a few years ago that the shortage of public conveniences became a problem for me - thankfully no longer after successful treatment - and only once did I get caught short, ironically on my way to the classic car show at Evet City, Manchester. After that I carried an empty fabric softener bottle in the car (large capacity, wide neck) though I never actually needed to use it.
These days, though I don't suffer the same urgency, I still have a pee just before leaving home - just in case...
And gentlemen, if you have any problems in the waterworks department, do go and see your GP - you know it makes sense! _________________ David

I can remember visiting not long after it first opened. (30 years ago??) We really hit them on a bad day. It was cold and overcast so nothing solar was working and there was no wind. The Pelton wheel was broken and the digester was out of action. I can't remember anything that worked although I might be doing their toilet a diservice. I do believe in green initiatives but back then we still had a lot of progress to make.

I think it is a few more than that. Water isn't made, it just is. Something like 4 billion years old |

| When I was a kid I could never understand why people didn't like Lucozade and Irn Bru, as there was always 3/4 full bottles on the roadside at motorway junctions........ |

Hi PeterM
I think the 7 times quote just refers to progress down the Thames from Gloucestershire to Essex rather than the larger river to sea to evaporation to rainfall and then aquifer cycle over millenia _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

I just wish we would stop wasting money on space exploration and divert the cash into discovering quite how to manufacture water. We know the formula, just not how to do it. If we could do so it would alleviate misery for millions on this planet.
I have spoken to scientists who tell me it is considered possible but nobody is stumping up funds to really try. I doubt that I will ever get to visit or live on Mars so why bother trying? I would prefer my taxes to be spent on something far more useful to so many in the short term. Once achieved we would have even more money to splash out on space adventures as we would have less overseas aid to support.
Just my opinion. Rant over. |
