Hi all,

The temperature's due to clear 30C across much of the country today. Have you had to make any mods to your car(s), to cope with hot-weather driving?

On the Dodge (car) I had to fit a shield between the mag and the exhaust manifold above it, as the latter would overheat the mag regardless of the weather conditions. Today it'd be even worse without the shield in place. I might take the car out later, so that'll be a good test for fuel vapouristation which, so far, hasn't really been an issue.

I can open the sun roof but that's counter productive if the sun is shining. I find the best old car feature for hot weather is the opening windscreen. It makes the car noisey but just an inch or so makes a big difference to the stream of fresh air entering. Unfortunately with a large exhaust pipe down each side and only half an inch of ply and some carpet above it I have no answer to that as there are no foot well vents.

I've been to Penrith and back today (400 mile round trip for a 1 hour meeting)
As I was in the modern, only mod was to turn the air con up a bit

In future I will have to be very careful driving i hot weather with the window open. I used to do that and last month had to have a tumour caused by the sunshine removed from my head. Thankfully they caught it in time. There is now a sun hat in each car

I have been to Birmingham and back today and it was very, very hot in the modern.
Air con? Yes it has but if I have it on for more than 20 minutes I start to sneeze and that's not the safest thing to do at 70mph. Dry itchy eyes follow the sneezing so I don't have it on except in a traffic jam.

The Series 2a has superb air con, just open the bulkhead vents.

The Jaguar Mark 2 is an ordeal in hot weather, abysmal ventilation and heat soak from the engine.

Just open the windows, the vents and turn off the heater plus on the 1938 Rover open the windscreen and sun roof but the have to wear a hat. No other mods but engine temps sometime rise to just below hot but in long traffic delays over 20 mins but no hassle

I know what you mean!
The MK 10 is even worse with such a large glass area. The problem was addressed, however with the introduction of air con on the later 420G.

Fortunately for me my Dodge has a different electrical set up to the earlier model that Rick described. My car is known as a '6 volt 2 unit' model (116 inch wheel base with 5 bearing engine) in which the original 12 volt starter/generator was replaced with separate 6 volt starter and dynamo. The magneto was replaced with a coil and distributor situated well away from the exhaust heat.

As I replied to a similar question in another forum - I prefer to roast my nuts at Christmas.

Did over a hundred miles in the Austin Seven yesterday; sunroof open, windscreen open, scuttle vents open, bright sun and 31C outside ... brilliant!
Interestingly, no signs of fuel vaporisation or overheating even though I got stuck at road works for over ten minutes; the car seemed to run better than ever.

Open the windscreen and foot vents on the Hillman, always gets a good breeze going through when we're on the move.

Took the Herald out on Monday, did about 50 miles with no issues. It used to be prone to fuel vapourisation with the original Solex carb in that it wasn't keen to restart hot, but since swapping to SU's and rerouting the fuel line to suit it's been fine. Mind you, I did make up a heatshield that fits between carbs and manifold, but mostly as it provides a handy mounting for the improvised throttle cable and linkage.

Looking forward in the drive back home from the office. Need to make a detour to pick up some things. All in all it will take maybe two hours - great in the TR4 Cool
