Clearing out my dads house (he passed away in the summer) there is what I believe is an Aerial square 4?.
My Dad dismantled this bike in the 40/50's when he did his national service, in order to stop his younger brother wrecking it! Then got married and it stayed in his loft

What I know about bikes you could write on the back of a postage stamp! But I want to put it back together, given I have never heard of Aerial, is this a waste of time? (Parts availability etc)

wow what an interesting find!! there's a lot of bike knowledge about so shouldn't be too hard to get some info together. Plenty of bike jumbles and shows just as for cars, perhaps the biggest 'do' is a gathering down at Stafford I believe each year. I've not been but my uncle, who has a 500cc Velocette (in his hallway) tells me its a cracking show, lots of parts etc etc. I think the hardest thing with old bikes (as an onlooker, not an owner I hasten to add) is making sure all the bits on a given bike are proper and correct, due to the interchangeability of parts between years and marques.

Pigtin can answer this one best, he has an early 600cc if I remember correctly. Do you know which one you have? They grew to 1000 cc later.

The designer of it, Edward Turner, was possibly the best motorcycle designer britain has ever produced.....

OT somewhat: is that the same Edward Turner that designed the alloy V8s for Daimler?

Yes, its the same Edward Turner. He was responsible for designing the Triumph (motorcycle) twins as well. If you look closely at the Daimlers cylinder head, you will even notice similarites to the bike engines head!

Hi Dave,
If you can post a picture of the Squariel I may be able to identify it, they were made from 1930 to the mid 50s and underwent quite a few changes.
The original was a 500cc OHC, then enlarged to 600cc. In about 1936 they went to pushrod operated valves, marketing a 600 and 1000cc. When production restarted after the war they dropped the 600 model and the final 1000cc one in the 50s had four pipes and an alloy engine.
'Draganfly' in Bungay I believe are the main spares stockists.
All this is off the top of my head and I apologise if I have any of it wrong.
I restored my 1939 600cc model during the 90s and the engines in particular were expensive to work on. most of the rest of the bike has parts shared with other Ariel models.
