USA politics must be one of the most complicated and arcane subjects of any country anywhere in the world.

It's not just Liberals -v- Conservatives.

Hilary Clinton, a Democrat, was originally a Republican and nobody really understands how Trump was adopted as the Republican candidate.

Mrs Clinton is a highly intelligent woman, a formidable lawyer at one time and some say the "drive" behind her husband's presidency.

What do you all think?

To the independent American voter it must seem like selecting to car share with a mad pit bull terrier or a hungry bear. I wouldn't trust either of them as far as I could throw them.

To be honest I've not really studied either candidate in much depth, but from what I see neither really inspires me much, if at all.

I don't much like either of them but Trump would be a massive disaster, God knows what he would be liable to do, so Clinton would get my vote

From what I'm hearing, the president needs to get policies approved by Congress (and maybe the Senate as well, I'm not really up on it as I'm not all that interested), so whichever gets in, if they then decide to do something controversial, it still needs approval from Congress, and they've shown they can drag things out for years if they want to. I'm sure there's a list floating around of stuff that Obama has talked about doing, but still haven't been done even though he's been in for eight years.

But the image of them in the media does put you off either one of them. Maybe it's all just media hype, and them playing it for all the free publicity.

Being a stone's throw from the border, US television is the norm. We watched the debates and other programs. The idea of either of them as President is so far from ideal as to be horrific. What concerns me as a non- American, is how the country will deal with foreign policy and homeland security.

The runaway train can't be stopped pre election but I doubt either candidate will complete anything close to one term. If there is blame for how the two candidates reached this point then one has to look into a much flawed election process that allowed it to happen and a flame fanning media that insists on taking gasoline to a fire at every opportunity.

If I were a Canadian [which I'm not, but I have blood rellies there]....I wouldn't trust the US of A as far as I could throw it.

After all, isn't it a fact they invaded Canada once, and seriously planned for it again in the 1930's?

My thoughts exactly, either of them getting the job fills me with dread.

Alastair,

In the late 70's the Party Québécois were odds on to win the provincial elections and it's manifesto was separation from Canada. The St Lawrence seaway runs completely through Quebec at one point and it's the only part the the Americans don't/can't control completely. It later emerged the the Yanks actually had made invasion plans to secure their strategic interests in the Seaway. Quebec never did separate but I often wonder if they got a 'sniff' of the plan beforehand which made them chose a different plan.

In our household we're rooting for Trump. For all his faults the issue is change or more of the same. For us that's no brainer.

I could never forgive Obama for his arrogant and patronising meddling in Brexit. All the more hurtful when I have always regarded America as our closest spirititual ally in the world.

Excellent terminology, and something that we see all to often over here too. Sometimes I wonder who is trying to run the country, the government or the media, who it seems sometimes will stop at nothing to make us all look like fools in the eyes of the outside world.

To date, and as an example of good manners, it is likely that this is the most polite and mature US election discussion to grace the internet.

What I find difficult to understand is why the respective parties, Democrat and Republican, both chose candidates with "pasts".
Most of you will remember the Clintons and the Whitewater scandal, Hillary Clinton made a substantial sum of money dabbling in cattle "futures" and you only have to Google Donald Trump and you see masses of allegations about his private and business life.

It's all about money of course. Donald Trump has financed his own candidature and Hillary Clinton has support from American financial and economic powerhouses.

Recall 1980 when Jimmy Carter and Ronald Reagan both had unimpeachable pasts, standards seem have deteriorated since.
