I'm trying to research the history of Gunson Tools, a brand that is still going strong after all these years.

My understanding is that the company was started by Granville Unsworth, but I am finding it very difficult to come up with any information at all.

Does anyone have any information they could add?

It grew by acquiring the DIY products of the 1950's car mags eg the SQPCR Tappet adjuster or something with some of those letters in its name. There are others too

SPQR = Small Profit Quick Return - as I understand it.

Good products - I had their tappet adjuster & the glass spark plug. Was the carb balancer theirs too?
With the benefit of experience I could have done without them, but they were useful at the time.

I fitted an SPQR remote change to my first Mini Van and again to my first Mini car, but within a short time I fitted an 1100 and later a 1300 unit.

I think the carb balancer was SPQR and Colourtune. Have them both - I forgot about the Mini remote change

I've had a Gunson dwell meter [with other capabilities] for something around 30 years now.....the scales are a bit bleached, and the wires can be a bit stiff now, but it still works!

A good-buy has been a Gunson strobe too.

A Gunson exhaust sniffer [what would you call it?] I found to be rather long-winded in its use....better to go to Bogg Bros at East Lutton.

The colour tune plug I have found to be of little effective use....especially as I've mastered setting up twin SU's...[a cheapo digital calliper being a useful tool]....

Then there is the Gunson compression tester..works better now the hose has been re-crimped, and a new O-ring fitted.

SO, I guess, I have placed much reliance on the instrument side of Gunson's range..

I've had an Eezibleed for years, and it has done every thing required of it, i.e. made bleeding brakes bleeding easy. Laughing

....Aah yes, I also have an Easibleeed..forgot that [comes with having a car with road 'n cable brakes?]....I use a tyre with no ore than about 5 psi in it....and the range of reservoir adapters has been pretty limited [none would fit a Skoda, so one had to be made!]....but, it works, providing one has an unlimited source of brake fluid? [Halfords, 5 litre can, for me].....I always went around freeing off all the bleed nipples [can one call them that nowadays?]first....just in case things overflowed.

So no one has any idea of the history of the company then?

Normal practice nothing sinister - there are the public records

If you go to Companies House BETA you will find all the accounts etc of the parent company THE TOOL CONNECTION LTD (also own Laser tools & Kamasa)
name
https://beta.companieshouse.gov.uk/company/01968900/filing-history

The key shareholder also owns the Gunson name

As an aside:
SPQR is an initialism of a Latin phrase Senātus Populus que Rōmānus ("The Roman Senate and People", or more freely as "The Senate and People of Rome"; Classical Latin: [sɛˈnaː.tʊs pɔpʊˈlʊs.kᶣɛ roːˈmaː.nʊs]), referring to the government of the ancient Roman Republic, and used as an official emblem of the modern-day comune (municipality) of Rome. It appears on Roman currency, at the end of documents made public by inscription in stone or metal, in dedications of monuments and public works, and was emblazoned on the vexilloids of the Roman legions.

The phrase commonly appears in Roman political, legal and historical literature, including the speeches of Cicero and Ab Urbe Condita Libri ("Books from the Founding of the City") of Livy.
Courtesy of Wikipedia, but I remembered it from Latin history...

None of the Ezibleed caps fits a Morris 8, either! Fortunately I had a spare cap to adapt (moral—never throw anything away).
