In the topic "Riley RM A Gentleman's Car" the conversation got around to producing the character ½
http://www.oldclassiccar.co.uk/forum/phpbb/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=19177
The code numbers vary depending on what the Keyboard setting is and the operating system e.g MS Windows.
I use English United States keyboard option. Windows 10
Alt 156 = £ and Alt 0189 for the ½.
The characters produced can vary dependent on the chosen keyboard setting and also on the program being used at the time.
The £ and fractions being the most common that I use and therefore remembered.
Google search along with trial and error. Then just make a simple list.
Edited: I typed in the symbols "╜ ╚" when I posted this message. but they were replaced by what you see &# etc in the subject line. So it appears that the only thing certain about characters is that nothing is certain. |

I never could remember the code numbers. However, MrsP directed me to the Character Map.
Select, copy, paste. Easy peasy.

Peter,
What is wrong with 1 slash 2 (1/2?) I conveys the message IMHO.
I noticed that when in MS Word and 1 slash 2 is typed it compresses it to what you want.

Hi Art, there is absolutely nothing wrong with 1/2 or 1/4 or whatever and yes clever MS Word does the work for us.
My posting was initiated from an off topic drift in the Riley thread and adds to the information by me pointing out that area Keyboard selection, (I use English-American) affects the code conversion along with other factors. |

I also used to use the character map, but found that some forums don't like the characters, or mess them up in some way or other. |

The problem with 1/2 is when you combine it with a whole number: 21/2 doesn't convey the same meaning as 2½, does it?
The one that took me ages to find was the € symbol, which appears on my keyboard beside the figure 4 - it needs Ctrl & Alt pressing to activate - easy once you know ... _________________ in the garage: 1938 Talbot Ten Airline

Mike,
I would use a space between as in 2 1/2. Not perfect I'll admit.
