Back then, Coniston Hall was a popular camping location and we saw Bluebird running tests. It was easy and simple to visit the pier, watch mechanics working on the boat and see Donald and family. At peak holiday times the local constable would provide a security cordon.

Quote from above article "The fuselage has been painstakingly rebuilt by the team, with almost all the parts having to be specially made.
The replacement engine was donated by De Havilland Aviation in 2007 and is almost identical to Bluebird's original Bristol Orpheus engine." End Quote.
I am 50/50 as to this project. |

Hi
It's # K7
I know the article says
["Once this is done there's always been the hope that she'll be displayed at speed back in Cumbria."]
But I heard the broadcast and both he a Gina said they wouldn't be looking to go even close to the record speeds, desspite John Humphrys prodding, he even got the speed wrong and thought it was 600
Even 70 to 100 would look impressive for occasional runs out from the Ruskin Museum. _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

Was Donald Campbell's body ever recovered?
I don't think it was although I am willingly open to correction.
Coniston Water isn't very deep IIRC. _________________ Starting Handle Expert

Coniston Water isn't very deep IIRC. | It was but only when the craft was recovered in 2001. |

My opinion.... Not K7 but a virtual replica of K7. Once discovered it couldn't be left because it would have been plundered. As it was when recovered it should have gone to a museum local to Coniston. If those who have rebuilt it wanted a working version maybe they should have built one from scratch. It's like the "original" brush that's had 4 heads and 3 handles. A sorry state of affairs where neither of the parties got it right. |

This is a bit like that Spitfire they got off the beach in France a few years back and that Guy Martin worked on for a TV prog. Virtually the only thing they could keep was the frame number. In some ways it'd be better just to coat it in a preservative and put it on display as is, and as said then build a replica. |

"Neither fish nor fowl" ? I think that over emotional and over ambitious plans have soured the K7 Campbell Story. I remember seeing Campbell do test runs on Coniston, he was a character and the project sat easy on the day but times have changed. Campbell, Coniston and Bluebird were fused in a single entity and should have been allowed to stay there. |
