Am tempted to buy a pre 73 Landrover. For towing and launching my boat etc'.
I know very little about them, apart from the fact that they are a bit 'Juicy' and early ones have o.h.i.v. engines.
Advice on any problems 'to look out for', and what I should be paying would be appreciated.

Hi

One thing springs to mind for me, lpg, and a rusty chassis! They made most of the bodies in ally, so why didn't they do a ally chassis, or are they not allowed?

I prefer the truckcab versions as you can put a canvas on them, and then you ahve a van, or leave it off and you ahve a truck, but they arn't very secure for storing stuff in the back. I saw one chap had lined his canvas with ally, but why not have a hard back?

Military ones do have a slightly more rugged construction, but at this age I am not sure it will make much difference, and if you are aiming to do alot of towing, check the rear crosmember carefully, as these can pull out if rusty! Laughing Embarassed

don't military ones have chassis built from heavier gauge?? possibly run 24v systems too some (perhaps the radio trucks?)

there are 2 Landies for sale at the local garage, one a series 2 and the other a truck cab series 3, both light blue and needing some fettling/tlc

Yeah I would avoid the 24V, as you have to get special costly bits then, also the lightweights, they will be more expensive to maintain and buy as they are sought after. The chassis on millitary were heavier guage Like I said, but with the use and age they are, unless they have been kept very well, the most rugged original chassis will be showing it's age.

It's a newish club for anyone remotely interested in Land-Rovers. There are other clubs but these folks are very easy to get on with and there knowledge is 2nd to non.

On a personal note...I've had both civilian and MoD Land-Rover's and I look at it this way, Civilian vehicles are softer riding and in worse condition but MoD are far better mechanically.

My preference series 3 vehicle would be the LWB 109" as it tows far better then the 88" SWB. The engine will be the 2.25 petrol...old but virtually bomb proof!

About the chassis...MoD vehicles were almost the same as Civvies albeit apart from some electrics. There was a Heavy Duty version but the only differences were extended spring hangers and twin mounted fuel tanks fitted under the driver & passenger seats.

One last point....it's far better to go on condition then age when it comes down to your Land-Rover selection! We all prefer not to pay Tax but buy wisely and the rewards will outweigh what you pay the exchequer!

I owned 3 Landrovers, one LWB and the other 2 SWB. For what you want to do I suggest that you look at a SWB series 2A. The engine should be 4 cyl. 2.25 lts. with OH valves. These are the most reliable engines. The SWB will get out of any bog, but the LWB will just sit there and spin all the wheels. Unless you have 200 kgs. in the back ! Fit 16 x 7.50 tyres, with a good mud tread. These tyres will give you a larger dia. and higher road speed. On a flat road , I could do a steady 60 mph.
