|
|
Having spent the last 10 years+ rebuilding my 1932 Riley 9 Special I have finally managed to get it to a point where the engine is running.
However, there must be a hairline crack in the block as I have a small amount of water in the sump. This will necessitate a complete dismantling and check.
In the meantime, is there anything I can add to the water to temporarily "heal" the crack and allow me to continue checking everything.
Any recommendations? Casting repair companies etc..?
This car had been in storage since 1963 so it would be nice to get it back on the road before the next century!!

Alistair,
What is it that makes you suspect the block is cracked? It could just be a head gasket or some other place where the oil and water are in close proximity. Is it possible to rig up a pressure tester for the rad? I made one for my 47 Jaguar using a spare cap and a rubber valve stem and ‘pumped up’ with a bicycle pump. It worked a treat revealing my leak.

I can't claim any recent experience but many years ago I formed the opinion that pour-in products may or not stop leaks but they are quite effective at blocking the passages in radiators.

It could easily be a cracked head or leaking head gasket, especially if the head has been faced too many times. I have been told that cracked heads are not uncommon on Nines but I have yet to see one.
I would remove the sump and rocker carriers and pressurise the cooling system to try to identify the problem. The engine in my Nine had to have a lag tappet bore sleeved as it had corroded through to the water jacket but I haven't heard it a common occurrence.
A friend used Irontite Ceramic on his Fiat 519 quite successfully.

Update: Added a sealing fluid and all seems OK now. Unable to test it on the road as it has no tax...not even Historic status! Paperwork done to change the status and looking forward to the crash gearbox
Need to keep an eye on it to see if it is cured. _________________ Alistair
