I want to make a small panel from aluminium for the centre of my dash. What thickness ought I to use? I was thinking 3mm for rigidity whilst still being easy to fold. It may hold gauges and switches in the future.

I would think that 3mm is a bit on the thick side. In ‘days of old’ when you could these sort of things at Half*rds they would have men made from 18 or 16 gauge which is about 1 to 1.5mm thick ( the lower the gauge number the thicker).

Quite thin ally sheet can be used. Rigidity will depend on how well the edges are folded? Not a good idea to leave edges as plain and sharp. Folding edges, or making flanges, makes the panel more rigid and less likely to cut fingers.

Thanks for advice, have just come off the phone from local supplier (Twiggs of Matlock) who suggested 14 gauge (2mm) so I'll be picking it up, cut to exact size, in the morning.
