Living in one corner of Australia gives one the opportunity to travel a long way before the risk of falling off the edge.
1975 In a 1928 Model A Ford complete with trailer from Melbourne to Perth and back. Round trip about 5,500 miles

1976 Same Model A, and same trailer Melbourne to Cairns and back Round trip approx 5,000 miles.
2014 In a 1982 Rover SD1, a repeat of the Perth trip, but without trailer.

There have been many other memorable ones, such as Alice Springs in 2013 in our 1959 Rover 90 (http://www.oldclassiccar.co.uk/forum/phpbb/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=14196&highlight=) and a tour of Tasmania for our 50th wedding celebrations, late last year, also in the Rover 90. I hope that my wife and I can manage at least a few more in the coming years _________________ Dane- roverdriver but not a Viking. |

One of my personal favourites was a trip down to an early Festival of Speed at Goodwood, around 1996/7 iirc. We took my old dark blue XJ12L Series 1, all 5.3 litres and four fuel-hungry Strombergs to keep full. I seem to recall spending around £150-170 or so on fuel for the weekend, which felt like a lot at the time, but it was a very enjoyable run there and back, swiftly wafting along with 12 of Browns Lane's finest cylinders to haul us along.

One that sticks in my mind dates from when I first got the SS on the road and I kept getting punctures. This was due to two things. The wheels had been grit blasted and there was some still trapped in the rolled edge of the rims but even more significant was that I had yet to recognise the existence of heavy duty tubes.
On one little trip I was about 25 miles from home and got two punctures and had to repair the second one at the roadside with 7 inch tyre levers and a John Bull repair kit.

When I first bought my 3.4 Mk 2 Jag in about 1970 I lived in Victoria. Soon after dawn on the first Sunday of my ownership I drove the car at high speed on deserted winding roads through the Dandenong Ranges east of Melbourne for a couple of absolutely glorious hours. I still look back on that drive with pleasure.

Its weird being the same age as old people.
You are either part of the problem or part of the solution |

The trip we've recently made: Land's End to John O'Groats via B-roads in our '63 Riley One-Point-Five, will be hard to beat. We drove over 2,000 miles, the weather was perfect the whole time, we saw some beautiful countryside and met some great people. It was by far the best week's motoring I've ever had.

St Tropez at 7pm, Le Mans at 7am. A blast across country before the majority of motorways existed, on arrow-straight roads, diving into the mist and coming out the other side. The drive of my lifetime. |
