Hi all,

On and off I've been putting together a spreadsheet of the vehicles I've owned since the mid-1980s, when I acquired my first derelict (a couple of years before I was old enough to drive officially). Part of the project has also been to dig out one good photo of each of them, to ultimately create a record of my motoring misdemeanours. This has involved blowing the dust of various old (print) photo albums, and scanning images as necessary.

Has anyone else gone through this process, for interest's sake?

RJ

Yes. Except it is a spreadsheet only, no pics - I keep those elsewhere on the computer. I try to have a folder of each car containing pics and documents etc. The spreadsheet contains all cars from the household, including modern cars.
In the sheet I have the make and type of course, chassis number, registration, build date, purchase date, purchase price, sell date, sell price. In an extra column I have put the market value for the cars I still own - please to see that this is always higher than the purchase price. Except for the modern cars - these were always sold with a loss.
Overall balance is still positive which means I have had no depreciation overall but a small gain.

41 cars since 1983 which I actually drove or still have, plus 20 which I bought but never did anything with and sold on.

At the last count I was up to 83 cars (since 1964), but all the details are in my head; perhaps I should do something like this - it might make more space in my brain for yet more useless information Laughing

I have a list, mostly with photos of 36 ranging from my first- a 1918 Model TT Ford, to our most modern 1982 Rover SD1. With the exception of the TT, are all cars owned and driven. I have not worked out cars owned but never used, they range in age from a 1909 Napier to a Datsun 180B.

I probably hold the record here for the fewest cars owned so no need to keep a written record.

My regret is that I do not have a photo of all the cars I have owned . Some I have but one only and not in colour . It did cost a lot to make photos in the old days ......

Two (not very old) cars that I don't have photos of, are/were both Fiestas. One, a rough Mk2 that I had visions of using as a winter beater (but didn't), the second a Mk3 that was purchased from a neighbour for the princely sum of £80 (with a rusty door). We ran that for a while then part-ex'd it with a bloke up the road for an Escort, which unfortunately I do have photos of.

At least one photo survives for all the others. My biggest error was buying a Vauxhall Carlton estate with a knocking engine. I had big ideas of using it as a banger-nomics car, a bit sheddy but very practical. A replacement engine was acquired and the swap commenced. However it wasn't an exact replacement and everything was slightly different, to the extent that it wouldn't quite go in. In the end I threw in the towel, loaded the replacement engine into its boot, and had the lot taken away for scrap.

Alas a small photo of that one survives too, as a reminder ...

I sat down a couple of months ago and prepared a scrapbook showing pictures of every road licenced car and motorcycle I have owned in sixty years of driving. I have no personal photos of earlier cars, but in these cases I included images from the internet.

I ended up with 30 cars and 11 motorcycles.

This total does not include vehicles that I bought to wreck for spares to keep some of my older cars on the road. It does not include long-term rental cars or company supplied vehicles of which I had quite a few when working in North-West Australia.

Its weird being the same age as old people.
You are either part of the problem or part of the solution

I used to have an immaculate Carlton Estate. Massive carrying capacity and quite comfortable for long journeys. Ideal for camping (if you like that sort of thing) and the one I had was white so it got known as Mobey. Not the best brakes.

When I discovered the chassis frame had rusted through I welded on a heavy U section plate and sold it pdq.!

I once started making a list but sadly can't remember all of them. I have very few photos of the older cars or the motorcycles that I've had to help.
As I started writing a few down I remembered many that are now worth considerable amounts of money,Vellocette Venom,BSA DBD34,Royal Enfield 750,Jaguar Mk7,Frogeye Sprite and Capri RS that I decided to pack it in before I got too depressed.

I'm in your bracket too Ray. I think my total count is 23 and that is over 54 years of motor transport.

Range Rover P38 4.6 LPG Vogue
MG TC project
Austin Swallow
Triumph GT6 Mk3
Vauxhall Zafira GSi
Range Rover 3.5 Vogue
Vauxhall Zafira VXR
Vauxhall Carlton Estate
Vauxhall Astra GSi
Vauxhall Cavalier GL
Peugeot 309
Wolseley 2200
Austin A55 Cambridge (mk1)
Austin A30
BMW Isetta 300 3 wheeler
BMW Isetta 300 4 wheeler

That's just 16 cars owned over 49 years.

The 4 wheel bubble car couldn't be driven on a motorcycle license and was taxed as a normal car but I have included it because it showed a profit.
The Wolseley and the Peugeot were stop gap cars in between jobs where I had company cars.

I haven't included the Ford 100 e that I used to drive but actually belonged to my Mum or the Ford E495A that I bought but had to sell immediately.
