------
Greetings from 'down under' as in New Zealand
I found your site rather interesting but am after some help
My dad had a few bikes as a youth (born 1911) pre WW2. One was a
New-Imperial 250 and a Norton 490 16H side valve.
I am trying to find pix of these models on the net and know nothing of
motor bikes.
This is what my dad has written and I'm hoping you could help, please.
"We later had motor bikes. Mine was a New Imperial 250cc, two speed, belt drive, no clutch. Later I got a Norton 490cc 16H side valve. It really
travelled well, the only noise being the plomp, plomp, plomp from the
exhaust. The New Imperial had no lights, and we had to be home by "lighting up time". This was permitted in those days. Only once did we miss out. We were pushing the bike after dark and met a policeman. He said, "Where are you going?" We told him. He said, "There are no policemen that way, I'm going this way." We thanked him and rode to my cousin Nan's where we were staying.
The Norton had acetaline head and tail lamps, a small cylinder, fitted
under the saddle filled with carbide, turned a little knob on top, water
dripped onto the carbide, for acetaline gas which was taken by rubber
tubes to the lamps, which were lit with a match." _________________ Rick - Admin

G'day Rick
I could supply photos of both.....not having any luck with posting photos to the forum though.
Any chance of detailing move by move to a slow learner.
Howard. |
