Has anyone experience of trying to get back an original registration number.
The Triumph I own now was purchased some years ago by a person who was only interested in the then registration number. They re registered the car with an age related plate and sold the car on shortly after they purchased it the original number being used on an imported smart car. That vehicle has not been taxed, SORN’d or mot’d for nearly two years and, for the sake of originality, I would like if possible to get the original number back on my Triumph. The DVLA have a system for Registering a vehicle with its old number but only if that number is available. They do not however define how they determine if a number is available. Any help would be appreciated, I do not want to go through the DVLA system only to be given another age related plate.

I am not sure you can get it back if it is still on another vehicle, even if its on SORN or not taxed.

We have been in a similar situation with one of ours, the original number of our 47 Hillman was removed and sold to another person. I was told as this had happened the DVLA could do nothing about it.

Unfortunately you don't have any claim or rights to the original registration. The only real chance you have of recovering the original reg is to buy it.

Agreed, buying it would be the only option.

That said, even if the vehicle it is on is currently out of use it does not mean the registration is available for sale, some people simply like to keep the registration and maybe use it at a later date on a different vehicle.
