I have to admit to being somewhat embarrassed that my understanding of electrics is so much below parr. I have a similar kind of blind spot when it comes to maths.
In respect to this particular matter; if I am ever going to get this car on the road it would probably be better for me to know which wire goes where... rather than why they do.... A shameful mindset for which I apologise.
Setting aside all my previous mistakes for a moment and in an attempt to redeem myself, this is how I believe the wiring should be approached.
The battery has a heavy feed wire that goes to the starter switch. From this a 45 amp wire goes to the alternator large terminal. A smaller wire goes from the alternator to the ignition warning light and then onto a relay and earth. A wire from 85 on the relay connects to the ignition switch from which it goes, via terminal A on the (de activated) RF 95 and onto the A post of the ammeter. A 45 amp wire (already in the loom) then connects from the B side of the ammeter to the starter switch ...which is where we started!

Hi Ray.. With the greatest respect, my opinion is that to try and explain which wire goes where is a disaster waiting to happen. Large wire, small wire, A, B. this number that number. There are many on here who can give advice, help fill the gaps, but there has to be some knowledge of the logic and the dangers or implications of getting it wrong. Someone says ... "OK connect red to terminal A"...... and next thing is "should the smoke be black or grey"... |

Wrong for Ray's alternator, his alternator has internal voltage sensing and the small wire from the alternator is for the warning light which must go to +ve gnd via relay contacts to work correctly. |

You are probably right.
Perhaps I should hand it over to an auto electrician and be done with it. |

My exact point. My drawing was not intended to to show Ray's specific, it was there to try and explain where the Ammeter fits in the whole scheme of things. |

Perhaps one of the wisest posts on here |

I suggest the biggest reason for alternator failure or fatigue is the continued use of a weak battery. People often rely on their battery charger to get the car started but continued use of a weak or failing battery puts extra strain on the alternator and eventually it will fail; probably prematurely. |
