So, finally a garage has been found that will replace the starter ring on the Commer. Over 10 garages phoned and nobody would touch it.
I dropped it off yesterday and it will be done for Friday!
Lets see how it comes out. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

Well, picked up the newly fitted starter ring / flywheel from the garage yesterday morning. What a proper job they have done, I am well pleased.
And all for £54 inc the Vat. I had a really goid xhat with the mechanic who did the job, he's worked at the garage for 35 years!! _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

A morning last Sunday spent re-fitting the clutch, gearbox, prop shaft and starter motor.
Lifting the gearbox in with the crane was a must as its big and very heavy and has to be fed in at an angle due to the gear tower fouling the under side of the metal seat floor.

We are having issues stripping down our starter motor, the issue being we can't remove the locking pin that holds the sleeve rubber in place, any ideas?

So, after a little bit of work we managed to change the pinion over on the starter.
I took it back down the yard this morning and once fitted she turns over very well, much smoother than she has ever been in our ownership. She started up and sat on tickover until the fuel ran out. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

Thanks Gents, it does make you feel quite good when things like this out.
Both my father and I had big smiles on our faces when that starter was first pushed and she turned over lovely.
Next step, the body is going to be removed so we can start the rub down of the chassis and cab. Some welding is needed here and there and the brake pipes need replacing too. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

A good result.. Referring back to my own experience with failed starter rings, perhaps take a look to see if the engine has a tendency to always stop in the same position, it can be a sign of slightly lower compression or valve clearance.
A dab of white paint on the crankshaft pulley will suffice. |

So, we still have problems with the engine. When we went down the yard today we couldnt even get her to start.
Firstly we set the timing correctly, she was a fraction out. Then we checked for spark at the plugs and it was very weak. So then we checked the contacts and the spark was awful.
We proceeded to clean and reset the points and we cleaned all the plugs. But upon trying her then she still wouldnt start, we checked the carb and theres fuel getting there and plenty coming out the overflow when she floods!
Its got us scratching our heads again, very frustrating that she starts one week but not the next. Although saying that she didnt run wel when she did start last week. I have a few days off work so the plan is to head back down for another try in the next couple of days. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

I mentioned this before I think, but when I took the AA to the school fayre years ago it was missing and popping like a good 'un, the tiny lead under the dizzy baseplate was flopping around and randomly arcing against the body of the dizzy out of sight. With that replaced it transformed matters.
I assume the fuel is getting as far as the plugs consistently? I saw mention of compressions earlier in the thread.

Rootes, Have you got any interference suppression resistors in the plug leads or coil HT lead? I had strange intermittent misfiring due to one of these breaking up internally.
