One refers to him purchasing an ex-Hugh Hamilton MG Midget J4 in 1937 which he used in sprints. I have not found images of motor racing cars carrying sponsors names prior to WWII.
The outline can be seen on some your early photos such as those taken when it was delivered to you.
The alloy trim along the side I had always assumed to have been associated with the using the name Pegasus, the Winged Horse/Constellation and a simplistic representation of the same. I never thought otherwise. By 1950 at least, sponsors names were appearing on motor racing cars and played a great part in the BBC's reluctance to televise the sport. But old photos suggest that advertising first appeared on the trailers and trucks used to transport the racing cars. Stripping off the trim made it easier to paint the adverts.
In the late 60's my father owned an Anglia 1200 Super, which like several others had metal trim, secured with rivets, down the sides. Rust started to spread very quickly from each hole. |
Yes, I've always assumed that he removed the trims in order to have the signwriting applied, but I doubt that he fitted them beforehand. It strikes me that they are earlier - so who would have fitted them?
The light corrosion evident on the body sides isn't from the screw holes though, it's along the length of where the trims would have sat pressed against the body.

Hi
I wonder if DP had a contact at Duple who got him a pair of Bedford OB side flashes.
Plaxton used similar flashes as well on similar sized coaches. _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

Great photo Rick, just had our 25th Wedding Anniversary on 15th July, so I am now wondering what date this photo was taken? Cheers Steve. |

I decided to do a time-lapse video of big Dodge from when it was found in 1995, moved around various storage locations, then going away to be restored between 2007 - 2011. 500 photos feature in it, zipped through in a rapid ten-minute video. Also included, wartime shots of similar vehicles in action and also post-war photos of this vehicle in its new, post-war, life.
It was quite good fun going through all the old photos and reminding myself of the highs and lows of restoration .... it was certainly an experience.
