Most car manufacturers were real cheats when it came to publicity material.
Everything (except wheels) gets longer.

Here's one from my camp. Any other extreme examples?

Here's a couple from the Export Rover Sales Brochure of 1947.
I do think all manufacturers of the time were guilty of a bit of glamorising.
I have some original Rover posters from the 40s and my car looks nothing like the posters, below is a couple of examples

It looks as if Rover were playing exactly the same game as SS Cars and Jaguar. Namely keep most of it correct but extend the bonnet. Where they
differ is that SS/Jaguar not only extended the bonnet but the whole front of
the car but Rover were more honest on that but subtly reduced their overall
height instead.

One also notices the undernourished midgets they used to show driving these cars... it is unlikely they could reach the pedals unless they had telescopic legs. I also seem to recall that lower rooflines as well as the smaller people made the cars look longer and larger.

I think you're a bit harsh on SS cars/Jaguar,Peter.If anything, the real car looks longer to me,especially the rear.It is definitely lower than the drawing.
But I agree, the front part ahead of the wheels seems a bit overdone. All the same.I wish I could draw like that Laughing

This is part of an original advert which I have photographed. Unfortunately it is in a frame with glass so a bit of reflection is showing.....

If you compare this picture to my signature picture I am sure you will see subtle differences, the advert car being lower longer and sleeker looking.

The signature picture was taken with this advert image in mind, and this is the first time I've put them together.....Interesting Shocked

If I recreated the same lighting patterns/shading as the advert has for my photograph would my car look the same?

It could well be that this is how Rover would have liked the car to look. If so why did they not create this look with the P3 which is worse looking than the P2

Certainly undernourished vertically challenged people in this car, the driver even has his hat on and the top of his head barely reaches the fanlight vent Rolling Eyes

Hi Poodge,

No, I'm not really critcising the design of the cars. I think that both the Jag and Rover are good looking cars, I just find it amusing that the publicity departments of these companies felt the need to gild their lilies. Confused

As with American car adverts, showing young & attractive people having fun in their cars. One 1965 Ford Mustang ad shows a beautiful young mother in a flowing gown....
"Life was just one diaper after another for Sarah. Enter Mustang. Now there`s a new gleam in her husband`s eye. For Sarah? For the car? Both?...."

Even the advertising for my humble A40 was exaggerated somewhat..

Looking at Rick's A40 image the artist's changes are quite subtle. The proportions along the length of the car look about right. The main alteration
seems to be the height of the roof and also the height and shape of the windscreen. Perhaps surprisingly they have made the rearward sweep of the front wing look less elegant than in the real car. I wonder if this was done to give the impression of a longer passenger compartment. The straightening of the line along the foot of the front wing and along the sill does add elegance.

Austin had been guilty of this sort of thing for years...

There's room for at least another adult between those weird kids, and look at the length of that bonnet?

Nah! Total honesty! That lady in the front looks as if she's pressed hard up against the scuttle. Wink
