So, a big breakthrough in tracing the history of my 1942 Commer truck. I managed to track down an owner from 30+ years ago and they sent on some service records of the lorry when she was used after the war by a Rootes Garage as a tow truck.
The garage was called 'Woolleys Garage' and was in Windermere.
I have Googled it and found a couple of photos but was wondering if there was anyone on the forum who may have come across the garage before? Its obviously in quite a prominent tourist area so people may have seen or used the garage whilst holidaying in the Lake District?
The service records he has sent me date from 1955-1965, very interesting! _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

Brilliant. The 1939-40 RAC Handbook shows it as having been on Main Road in the town, which is quite a short road. At one end there's a filling station so I wonder if that's where they were based, with the workshop being where the Sainsburys Local is now?

It must be a substantial structure to pass the building regulations for a supermarket.
I wonder if those who could afford a car in those days realised what a golden age of motoring they were living through? |

Rootes, I hope you will take some photos of your Commer outside the supermarket perhaps parked where the old petrol pumps used to be with the "garage" building in the foreground like in this photo. I guess you might need ask the building across the street for access to their upstairs windows.

Another interesting note that I have made from the garage service records is that the Commer used the registration number '055 EC' when it was in their use.
That number though pre-dates the lorry by quite a few years so I wonder if its a number the garage held to be used like a trade plate? _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

Thank you Peter, certainly does follow the form of a trade plate. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |
