People thought that at the start of the industrial revolution when steam engines came into use. In reality, the employment market just changes and creates new jobs that didn't exist before.

I know that's the standard capitalist response; the facts for the poor mugs on the sharp end of such "market changes" are that the new jobs are insufficient in number with worse pay and conditions and much less security than the jobs they used to have. This technology needs to be controlled.
