The instrument chassis is also complete now, with ignition and light switches rebuilt and new vinyl labels printed.

Paul,
The car is progressing magnificently. The instrument cluster looks fantastic. A lot of work and a lot of money, but the end result will make you very happy.

Its weird being the same age as old people.

Hi All,
Some interesting developments with my car. A lovely bit of history of an early owner.
While dismantling the front bumper of the car to have it re-chromed, I discovered the number plate SA 4 (i.e., the fourth number issued in South Australia) hidden behind a white-on-black 6 numeral plate. A search online revealed that Sir Arthur Cudmore was issued SA 4 in 1907 and it remained in the Cudmore family until it was sold in 2012. Ivan Hoffman of the Sporting Car Club of SA advised that the construction of the SA 4 plate is of a type available from the 1920s, being alloy letters riveted to a cast-alloy backing plate. Although the numbers have been removed to fit the later plate over it, the outline of ’SA 4’ is clearly visible on the plate.
Further searches led me to Sir Arthur’s great-granddaughter, who put me in touch with Sir Arthur’s grandson, now 85 years old. He and I spoke on the phone for about an hour and he remembers the car and the circumstances of his grandfather’s ownership very well.
He described the following to me by phone on Sunday 14th February, 2021.
His aunt lived in England with her husband, but came back to Australia with her son in 1937/8 for an extended visit. According to Sir Arthur's grandson, Sir Arthur is likely to have asked them to bring with them a new car for him (something that had happened before), because they brought to Australia the two-year old Armstrong Siddeley Sports Saloon.
Sir Arthur's grandson recalled a number of features of the Armstrong Siddeley, such as the steel cover over the mudguard-mounted spare wheel (an ‘Ace’ brand cover used by Armstrong Siddeley at that time, and still with the car today), the fold-down boot-lid with chrome strips to carry a luggage trunk, and the fold-down table and footrests in the back of the front seat. He does not recall the car being two-tone green, suggesting that the car must have been repainted either in England before being shipped to Australia, or by his Grandfather on arrival in Australia. He did say that Sir Arthur was very fussy about the appearance of his cars and would not have tolerated damaged paint on the car.
In 1948, the family in England once again came to Australia for an extended visit. This time the English boy attended school with Sir Arthur's grandson for most of the year. During the visit, Sir Arthur's daughters convinced the now 78-year-old Sir Arthur that the Siddeley was too big and cumbersome for him, which resulted in him buying a new Austin to replace the Siddeley. Sir Arthur's grandson said he remembered the car being sold in 1948 as a 12-year-old boy during that visit. He said that Sir Arthur’s cars were always well-maintained and treated carefully, being stored in the garage when not in use.
Sir Arthur Cudmore was one of the founders of what is now the Royal Automobile Association of South Australia, and was its president from 1935 until his death in 1951.
I have been in touch with the RAA Historian and the National Motor Museum in Australia to find more about that period of the car's history. _________________ 1963 Sunbeam Alpine Series 3

A quick update on the Armstrong Siddeley Sports Saloon.
We have paint! I had the colour matched to hidden original paint that I discovered during disassembly, so this is as close as possible to the original colour as one could get. Very happy with the result.
Cheers,
Paul.
