My new toy is a 1972 Volvo 144 DL, I saw it advertised and couldn’t resist, unfortunately it has just done a condenser, which ate the points, new condensers have a square insulator and my distributor has a round hole, some modification will ensue.....

That looks great, will look out for that. Same era as dad's old 144S. If I still had the 164 it'd have made a good photo opportunity.

I remember the 144 being imported in 1967 and how my Dad enthused about it but the car was (to some critics) let down by horrible vinyl seats. Leather did not arrive util 1971...

If I had one of these now quite rare early cars I would prefer upgrading to leather... but I expect there would be howls of criticism from purists who, for some reason, prefer the original.

I also remember these with very durable cloth upholstery. That would be my choice now. Not that I am searching (I always find these a bit boring)

You are right. There was a good choice of covers available...and there still is!

Sadly the Volvo has gone back to the dealer, head gasket gone between 2 and 3 cylinders, dry failure but I didn’t sign up for work. Stewart at Sussex Classics was great to deal with, collected and full refund.
No fuss. Shame, as it’s a beautiful car but my wife and I are both ill at the moment and I couldn’t do with the extra hassle.
