Happy New Year everybody, I have now found the programme I was looking for earlier which includes pre-war TV clips from both systems.

Happy New Year and happy motoring in 2023.

The Click program has a certain amount of historical accuracy but the examples of what EMI and BTL were offering in 1936 was a piece of journalistic nonsense.

The Click team probably did this just to exaggerate the differences between the two systems and also to exaggerate the difference between today's television and that broadcast in 1936.

So what was shown in the shot above?

In the late 1920s John Logie Baird did promote a 30 line mechanical system that gave images similar to that on the left. The supposed EMI image on the right is a total fiction with a fraction of the number of lines and resolution that they were broadcasting in 1936.

In fact John Logie Baird's financial backers had removed him from the company in 1933 and replaced him as technical lead by a much more professional engineer, Capt A.G.D. West who hired a large team of competent engineers and scientists and installed them at the Crystal Palace in south London under the new company name Baird Television Limited. (BTL) This team were still rather lacking in a workable camera system and struggled to compete with EMI due to patent restrictions.

There really should not have been any contest between BTL and EMI because it was obvious to all (including the BTL team) that the BTL system was unworkable. The contest only took place for political reasons.

The specification of the BTL was reasonable and met the minimum standard of 240 line required for the contest but in practice it was almost impossible for them achieve reliably using their methods.

If you want to see what the EMI 405 line system and the BTL 240 line system looked like in 1936 then compare the test card images shown here:
http://www.nostalgiatech.co.uk/240%20lines.htm

If you want more information about Baird and the companies he initiated then take a look here: http://www.nostalgiatech.co.uk/new_page_35.htm

I just wanted to take a minute to wish you all a Happy New Year!

These days people don't spend much time or thought on some personal words to their friends and family, they just copy and paste some random stuff and send it on.

So, I want to thank you for your friendship and wish you a happy 2018!

You are the best gymnastics group anyone could ask for.

Best wishes

Wink
