The cause of the fault is one of the most common issues with this box. There is engineering view that the bushing for the 2nd/reverse cluster is inadequate anyway, although, just as quite a few gearboxes fail, there are others that carry on almost indefinitely. The long term cure is either to bond the bushes in place with one of the modern Loctite type variants, or have a single bush drilled for an oilway after installation. However, this is complex, because original bushes have a spiral groove which 'winds' oil along the shaft as the cluster rotates.
It does seem a shame that over the model's lifespan, Citroen never got around to developing a more robust gearbox. _________________ 1953 Citroen Traction

As an aside (which you may be familiar with)
this idea of a scroll type bush can also be found in axles and half shafts, but used in reverse; to act as an oil retainer. Unfortunately, although the bush doesn't move as in your gearbox, as it wears, it's effectiveness is reduced and oil finds it's way onto the brake linings.
What you have shown us is that a problem that might frighten others into handing everything over to an expert can be done by the determined home mechanic. Well done.! |

Still not quite there, a couple of minor jobs to complete and some paintwork on the bonnet lid around one of the catches. Weather, however, is still uncertain in classic motoring terms, so I don't think that I am missing anything. The Austin needs a run, so that is next on the list next time the sun shines on dry roads. I will try and get back on the road by the next St Catherines Sunday meet in March. Worth a visit, incidentally, if you are looking for a morning out, second Sunday of the month at Lostock Hall near Preston. _________________ 1953 Citroen Traction

Back in one piece again, Short test drive shows everything seems to work albeit change down into second is a bit stiff. Hopefully this will loosen up a bit after a few miles. Arctic conditions now are keeping the car in its garage, but hopefully things will improve and permit a longer drive before too long. _________________ 1953 Citroen Traction

Out on a grey New Year's Day, next to one of its kin having a rolling restoration. _________________ 1953 Citroen Traction
