WE don't tend to mention Rolls Royce very often; probably a 'class' thing coupled with 'money pit' fears ... but I would suggest that this one is ideal for the inveterate tinkerer.
I like the idea that a detailed report is offered with the car so you get a good idea of what work is required. So often, dealers try to side step all the work required and sell a car on it's cosmetics.
Looking through the report, I would say that although there is a LOT of work needed to this lovely car, there is nothing that any handy man (or woman) couldn't manage if they take a methodical approach to the project.
Personally, I would simply aim for general improvement and source good used parts where ever possible. There are always Silver Shadows being broken up so parts should not be too difficult or expensive.
I wonder what it will eventually go for? |

Ah! I see this is the stripped cheapo 2 door version
Interesting to see they show all wheels in close-up pics. Apart from the wheels, this also gives a close view to the wheel arches which condition are much more important compared to the wheels themselves in my opinion.
But from your topic opening Ray, I was expecting a real project. As in: restoration project.
Near the end of the listing, they say: It certainly deserves to be returned to the road
Of course! If this does not deserve "to be returned on the road" then I fear all my cars are not worthy enough.
This project not a big project. Its main work is on the brakes - and brakes are a difficult subject on these RRs. If it were not for the brakes, it only requires attention to various (slow) leakages and some electrical work. That is what most of my cars also need!
I think the emphasis these days is too much to get cars in showroom condition. Of course that would be the best, for someone who is used to buy new.
But there must be many people (like myself) who never bought new and am used to cars that are not as new. And who, in the case of a small "damp area" here and there, NOT immediately call the garage to rectify that.
That said, it is a genuine lovely car. Pity about the colour - would have been better in any other colour (except probably white). _________________ a car stops being fun when it becomes an investment |

I don't agree. I think there is plenty to be getting on with.!
I would say that this particular car is right on the edge of survival; any worse and it would not be worth taking on and what you say about the brakes is one of the main reasons. I can't really remember just now but I seem to recall the combined brakes and height control - a Citroen system - is highly complex. Someone has produced a colour coded animated graphic showing how everything works but even with that I think special equipment is needed to get the set up right. (Seemingly the full animation is Windows and so not compatible with MacBook!)
I do agree about the colour. I also think Rick is right ...the Bentley version - which I prefer - is less ostentatious but as only 98 T types were produced by MPW, they are now pretty scarce.
Indeed, some RR cars have been converted to Bentley...now that's an idea!!!

The winning bid was £16,000 (plus comm?)
It wasn't me.
Just as well because as 17ft long, it wouldn't fit in my garage!
(If I were to don my deer stalker and plus fours I would opt for a nice Mk6 Bentley as it is only 16 ft.! ) |
