Having just bought a caravan, I'm dusting down some of my parents camping gear.

This is a lantern, probably bought in the 80's it works fine , but I can't figure out what the highlighted control is for?

Any ideas?

Dave

I have a suspicion that it raises and lowers the light Is thT new mantle if it ios you might be able to take it off to avoid damaging it while trying the twist knob. Is the piece near the bottom of the picture connected to that "pipe" which appears to be connected to the upright which I think goes up to the cover over the light. The cap on that end seems to be knurled which would normally indicate that it is turnable.

No it doesn’t alter the mantle height or have any control over the gas.

Problem solved:

As the arrowed knob (first pic) is turned in a clock wise direction , the arm at right angels to the knob swings upwards so its end now sits at the same level as the mantle.
The arm stops in the vertical position but if the knob is turned further the gear wheel transfers the rotation to a shaft inside the arm, which has a knurled end (now at the top) which grinds on a flint held in the cap at the end of the arm. This showers sparks towards the mantle to ignite the gas. Smile
