This is quite an old video of a rebuilt Mark 6 Bentley engine. The work was carried out by RR/Bentley specialists, A.B. Classics of Stamford.

It will be observed that there are only six rockers. This is because the engine is an example of overhead inlet and side valve exhaust.

I am getting a bit long in the tooth for sports cars and so if I live long enough to finish the MG I plan on trading it in for a Mark 6 Bentley. The EPW (early post War) models are simply a delight. At the present time the saloons are largely undervalued but I can't see it staying like that for much longer. A good Mark 6 would be my choice, not least, because is is the smallest Bentley of it's type and at 16 foot would not be too big for my garage.

There are one or two provisos to a purchase. First is I would want the original (and troublesome) short chrome "cuff" cylinder liners to have been professionally replaced with one piece liners. Secondly, I would want the rear axle to have been upgraded to a higher ratio and the wheel bearings replaced again to a high standard such as those carried out by Norman Geeson.

The third item on my bucket list is that the underside be in very sound condition. Unfortunately the Mark 6 went into production using whatever steel Bentley could lay their hands on which shortly after the War which was, I have been told, often inferior.

The condition of the interior and the paintwork is important to me but being realistic I would make it conditional on any offer I made.

As it happens I tried to swap my unfinished MG project and my Austin Swallow for a remarkable Mark 6 with a S1 engine. I posted a video of MAC 651. (B40 PV.) Unfortunately, the dealer sold the car at auction; preferring not to take on my cars.

I could be tempted by an early model like this:

I can fully understand the passion Ray.
Years ago we had discussions with a Mk6 customer who wanted to have electric power steering fitted to his car. Driving it, it felt not heavy at all bar the initial / last meters. But the owner was older and not in the best of condition, he wanted to use the car more. So we fitted a EPS. Owner very happy and I have to say he uses the car a lot more.
But what impressed me most about his car was the quality of about everything. A car made with care. It drives very smooth and comfortable and fast enough to keep up with the traffic. I could see myself owning one in the future.

EPS was fitted to the car I was interested in (MAC 651). I had read the very impressive restoration blog. The dealer, a charming gentleman called Robert Bentley, (just by coincidence) had a stock of 80 far more "desirable" cars but this Mark 6 - with it's 4.9 S1 engine and EPS was the one he chose to take home after work. He described it as a Mark 6 "with a twist" and genuinely liked it's improved performance and handling. The Standard Steel model has fewer problems than the coach built versions and is inherently usable... so I doubt I would modify one... although I suppose if the car already has EPS fitted then that would be a bonus.
