Yes. This was at what was probably a once in a lifetime "Greatest Gathering" at Derby Alstom works.. I saw all the locos including that one. However, my interest is more towards steam and there was a veritable feast of locos of different classes.
For the first time I saw Flying Scotsman close up and in steam. The streamlined Sir Nigel Gresley was also there; as was Blue Peter, amongst many other famous engines.
Jean is pictured here against the magnificent Clan Line. I had never even heard of the Merchant Navy Class! (Sorry, that just shows my ignorance) Here I am with Flying Scotsman (with me looking rather unwell it has to be said!)
.
There were thousands of visitors but the only person I recognised was Pete Waterman who was displaying his vast model railway layout of Milton Keynes station.
I thought the 5" gauge steam models were very impressive.
Derby put on a fantastic event with something for everyone including actual rides on trains. We experienced a short trip in one of the brand new Elizabeth Line trains. All very nice and smart... even if the seats were a bit hard! |

"You lucky devil", I am very envious !
My best ever steam experience was in 1988 and 89 during our "bicentennial celebrations" and "Flying Scotsman" came out to Australia to the East coast and was then brought over the Nullarbour to the West coast where I saw it at the East Perth rail terminal, "Double headed" to Pendennis Castle. Watching them pulling a fully loaded train through our metro area heading on an excursion up to Northam (about 80 odd miles) and back was something I will never forget. I wasn't lucky enough to be on it, but they sure were impressive pulling up the steeper gradients of our Darling scarp. |

I remember that Northam run very well. Like you Rusty, I was not on the train, but was standing on the footbridge at Ashfield station as the double headed train thundered from Bassendean along the 'mad mile'. WOW!
Back to Ray's post. I am also very envious of you, Ray. It must have been a fabulous day with all those locos under steam. The smell alone of wet coal and hot oil would be so nostalgic to some of us old timers who remember steam as normal on rail systems.
The Merchant Navy class were Southern Railway locos and initially had a box like streamining (air smoothed) that earned them the nickname of 'spam cans'. I believe that the streamlining was removed for ease of maintenance in the nineteen fifties.

Its weird being the same age as old people.
You are either part of the problem or part of the solution |

^ Having spent a few weekends at a local heritage railway that runs a mixture of steam and heritage diesel-hauled trains, I find that I actually prefer to be behind the latter. I like to lean out of the window (perhaps I was a dog in a previous life...) to take photos, or just look at the view, and behind a steamer I just get stuff in my eyes. I'd far rather be looking at the steamer than be behind it. I get that there's the "experience" of being behind a special loco, and there's often something going on such as dining options and so on, but it's not for me.
Apart from anything else, my Dad was very much an LMS man, and quite disparaging of all the fuss around that particular loco. _________________ 1976 Vauxhall HP Firenza, 1976 Vauxhall Sportshatch (x2), 1986 Audi coupe quattro, 2000 Audi TT |

We're in Jersey on holiday for the week, we usually see plenty of classics over here but so far we've only spotted a couple MGBs and a Sunbeam Alpine. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |

Seen on The Magic Roundabout, fleetingly, from my taxi to the hospital was a "sit up and beg" Anglia or Popular in a bright luminescent Green. _________________ Bristols should always come in pairs.

Spotted on a driveway here in Jersey, a weather worn Standard flying 9 convertible, not used in many years I'd say. _________________ Various Rootes Vehicles. |
