A lot of younger drivers and older Peter Pans think it is funny to dazzle other road users with headlights adjusted up to dazzle. Some vehicles are delivered with incorrectly adjusted lights from the factory and the dealer's pre-delivery check was not done properly. Others fit after market high powered bulbs which are illegal to fit but not illegal to sell, some are blue which gives an even brighter light. Others have their fog/driving lights incorrectly adjusted which would be a nightmare for the driver in a fog because the light(s) would make the fog like a white wall i.e opaque. It is supposed to be illegal in victoria Australia to operate fog lights in other than foggy conditions but our police highway patrol police think it's OK for them to drive at all times with two headlights and two fog lights on all the time and dazzle everyone!

What a lot of folk don't realise is....it is easier to see in the dark at night [even with streetlights and vehicle lights out there]...as a pedestrian [or cyclists ] than it is for a driver, behind a windscreen, trying to identify hazards via headlamps.
Probably because, a pedestrian or cyclist may well have better night vision with the ol' mark one eyeballs, than a driver who is looking through a sheet of glass...sometimes covered in a traffic film, or dirt, or water...! Sometimes with the disadvantage of reflections of interior lights.....and more often, with eyes that are not attuned to night vision, due to headlamps reflecting in mirrors, etc.

I cannot ever emphasise the huge difference between driving at night without any form of lighting whatsoever [in my case, aside from cyalume markers..to tell other drivers that there's something big n heavy in front of them...important for a driver of an armoured vehicle]...and driving with headlights on.

Mark one eyeball night vision is very effective, providing there are no lights being shone around.. One retains a lot of peripheral vision........But with headlights on, one's vision is very ''tunneled!''

Trying to switch from one to the other, rapidly, isn't easy, especially when one ages....and one's eyes adapt to darkness less quickly than a twenty year old.

I would add, the modern provision of 'night vision devices' in the military actually bring on a whole raft of other difficulties which a driver has to get used to.
Even worse if driving 'on cameras!'
Mark one eyeball is the basic, primary, night driving technique however...

Sadly, I struggle to drive at night without any headlights at all......Don't other drivers realise, that 'flashing' their headlights actually puts on 'main beam,' which dazzles me no end??

Spotted a few out today.

First we passed a Land Rover FWC ex military ambulance and just now coming back through town a lovely bluey/green Ford Consul waiting at a roundabout.

It was waiting to pull out from a roundabout in Glastonbury..it wasn't two-tone, it was more like a turquoise...but I was driving so it was a quick spot as we were passing.

The other (rainy) day, a DeLorean drove by in the spray. On a hot sunny day a 300SL roadster purred by (only the second time I've seen this one, and it's fairly local).

Today, a red TR6 near us and a green example in Llangollen. While we were mooching around the latter, I was taken aback to spot a factory workshop manual for an (Oz only) Morris Major Elite in a bookshop - how did that end up in North Wales?!?!??!??

Quite a few vintage Bugattis have been past in the last few minutes, a quick look on the BOC site suggests that there's a reliability run on today. I'd love to know where they're heading to.

Four of the Bugattis were spotted again just now, heading in the opposite direction. Neat to see them being used on normal roads rather than at shows etc.
