Well today was THE DAY.
First an update for those who hasnt read all my posts.

I took my 122S mild custom/sleeper off the road 30 years ago.
And after the big fire in December did I realize it was time to get her going again.
Unfortunally could i not make a video, as the battery in my my Go Pro died.

So here is what happened from Saturday afternoon, till 4 Sunday morning
In order to make sure I had oil in all oil channels, did I prime the four oil channels in the heads, using a syringe full of oil.
Fairly big one = diameter is 4 centimeter , and its about 16 centimeter long.
Then I poured HOT water directly into the engine.
Also had a heater fan running underneath for oil filter & lpan for two hours before first go.

Had also moved the sparkplugs from were I put them 10 years ago, so that was 2 hours wasted, with relocating those.
Fitted them, and tried to start = engine was really warm by now, but no spark, tried another coil, but still no go.
So I took the two contact sets out of the distributer, and cleaned all connections & points.
Refitted everything, checked for good spark, refitted center wire to the cap, and she fired right up.
Ran smooth , and on all 8, I had forgotten what a sweet little engine this is, guess thats why it earned its nick name Master Piece.
Edward Turner did well Smile

Fridays repair of the oilpipe to the gauge didnt work (worn cobber collars) = 56 years old, so it still had one leak, which meant gauge didnt ?fire up? -
So in order to check after start up, did I remove the oil plug bolt, on the front of the left hand side head, and oil sipped out when idling.

Also got myself a "healthy mouth full? of Shell V Power 100 octane to boot 😉 ha ha
30 years later, and she lives.

Thanks for reading Smile

Jens Christian

Hi Jens. One of my favourite Volvos is the 164. I love the smooth B30 six cylinder engine and general finish and styling.

...but, I have an odd question for you.

When it came out in 1968, I remember my Dad getting enthused about it but making a comment that has stuck with me all these years. He said the square radiator made the car look older than its predecessors.

As an enthusiast yourself, do you agree ...or think this was even fair or true?

Our Queen had one of the first 164, think she got it late 68/early69.

I think the best looking one, is the early one.

After yesterdays start up, is here a brief story, on the engine

The Daimler I found back in the summer of 1987, were in VERY poor condition.

Dont think any one would have saved it.

Engine suffered badly from frost damage.

All the alloy between the spark plug holes had raised up, like ice flakes.

All frost plugs were pushed out, of both block & heads.

My mate welded 10 or 12 chunks of alloy back into the heads.

Gasket surface were also in very poor condition = badly corroded, with worm holes going everywere.

I had them machined, as we werent sure if they had warped, during the extreme heat from the mig welder.

When I assembled the engine, did I put Epoxy glue into all the small wormholes, and assembled, while still soft.

Still water found its way into the oil, but the STP engine seal put a stop to that, so 38 years later I was worried if it still holds up ?

So when I arrived tonight did I first check the oil, and it had no traces of water Cool

Latest = My 1961 Amazon 122S was finished Sunday morning (07,15) now with all its correct parts refitted.
Then taken right out of the workshop, and driven to Copenhagen (one hour drive, along the coast) for the annual spring/start of 2026 season meeting.
This event takes place at the classic barracks & court yeard for the Royal family of Denmark,s life guard & their horses.
The location is beautifull, only entry is via a narrow wooden bridge over a moat, and through the Kings portal.
Nearly 400 cars attended, so it took time to get in.

Some of the jobs done = correct manifolds - carbs - fuel lines etc fitted.
New bushes in upper wishbone mounts.
New correct brake pipes fitted - any one with a late 62 to 64 Amazon will know how big a job this is.
Engine & parts + steering assembly painted.

Didnt have time to adjust carbs / ignition, so it was a quick ear to the SU,s & a twist of the distributer.

The old 61 is now serving as my everyday transportation, while I am preparing my winter car for its MOT.

The age is starting to show = 1998
The gaitor on the passenger side, of the rack & pinion was split, and the anti roll bar was broken.

Also got a few more details fixed on the 61 = new return springs for the SU,s
Decal,s for the ignition coil, and charging regulater.

Pictures to follow.

At least it was an honest fault. He didn't realise I was watching but I saw the M.O.T. tester stick a blade into the bellows type gaiter on my 2000 Range Rover. I would have needed to renew it anyway when replacing the swivels but it was a deliberate act of sabotage. I was quite shocked but kept my own council not wanting to get into a "situation".

Ohh thats not nice Mad shame with people like that.

I used a local MOT tester. so know the guy from the old days.

And he was happy to find out I had plenty of coins, and small bills to pay with, as its hard to get change from the banks now.

As promised are here a few pictures of the 1961 Volvo I saved from the scrap yard =

Wrong manifold, and carbs fitted

Protecting plastic cut off, exposing the wiring

Nice wiring - nope - not here

More "nice" repairs =

Total view from the day I bought it =

And this is what she looks like now.
I have concentrated on getting it back to 1961 spec, on a very small budget, so almost everything was done in my little workshop.
The whole enginebay is hand painted with engine in place, using a brush.
I did have the heater casing painted by a pro, but I had to sand it down to bare metal, before he would touch it - took me 3 hours.

Notice the brake pipe for RH side (behind the battery) = only the first 3 years of B18 had this.
Took me many hours to fabricate.
Its longer than the one, that goes from the front to rear axle.

Its still the original wiring harness, I restored it using original plastic covering, and correct cable connectors.

Thanks for watching Very Happy

Great progress, I'd like another Amazon or PV one day.

Thanks Rick Cool

Just wanted to keep it basic, and to a minimum budget.

Here are a few more detailed pics.

If any of you want to check them more, then just click on them.
Then you get to zoom around -

First up is the pretty glass bowl fuel pump from AC.
Also notice correct early Dark Brown distributer cap = org Bosch.

Next is a close up of the carbs (swap meet find in Sweden) & intake (from England) .

The relay,s are for air horns - std horns & spot lights.

Original early airfilters were found in USA.
Notice the head on the original bolt,s = you dont get to see much of this in todays cars.

Its weird being the same age as old people.
You are either part of the problem or part of the solution

Hi all Smile

summer has arrived, so the old 122 is pressed into everyday service.

Any one else driving their classic as everyday transport ?

Today I started removing the re enforcement halfs, that is required, if you want to fit a tow bar, on a early Amazon.

Only way to get them these days =

Getting on with it =

Cleaning & preparing the parts =

Two done =

Tomorrow I get to do it all again.

This is one of Volvo,s hardest accessories to fit, if you have one of the early Amazon,s .
