Hi Malc.
Couple of ways I've used to get 10/4 and accommodation to shows.
The folding caravan is a 'Chateaumobile'. actually took it to the ATDC nationals in the cotswolds.

Novel way of manouvering the van. I went to Wincanton on the Friday last year. I didn't take the Austin, as I was not able to go on Saturday or Sunday. I am hoping to buy a trailer to take the car to shows. I am not sure of the realiability of the Austin. I have only taken her to Classics on the Quay at Poole, I am only 4 miles from Poole, they hold an event every Friday in the summer. I have also taken her to Bournemouth Pier on a Sunday during the summer. I hope to do more this summer. |

Hi Spindleboy.
A 10/4 reasonably well maintained is incredibly reliable but they are sometimes prone to head-gaskets blowing. I suggest that on any long journey you carry a spare, as it only takes about a half hour to replace.

Hi Don
I was a butcher for 43yrs and having retired two years ago I have been taking apart the bodywork and putting it back together and not had much time to get to know the workings of the engine. I met a chap at the Bristol Classic car show a couple of weeks ago, he lives quite close and he has offered to give me a hand with a good service.

Hi Ian.
Yes it was sprayed in 2 pack. The car firstly had to have some welding work done to the rear inner wings and centre door post. This was done by Trickett Welding near Poole and the spray job by AS Designs a specialist spray shop.

Brings back memories when I look at the A frame.
When I was doing motor vehicle inspections in western Quensland the Baloone Shire council (St George) have a lot of dirt road and to maintain them they have to grade them and because of the distance the operator stay out for a week so they made up a simular set up .
Grader - caravan - fuel tank - Toyota Land cruiser ute.
Didnt do any harm on the roads they were travelling probably because of the traffic , about 5 cars a week.
Wish I had taken a photo, still can if I go out there. its only 500k, used too 4 times per fortnight.

Hi Rick
Sorry have not been around for a while. My car is still on the road and running well. I have taken here to the Friday nite on the Quay at Poole a couple of times this year. I am having trouble with the clutch, it's slipping when I put any power on, especially on an incline. If anyone has any tips on sorting this problem please message me. I can obtain a clutch kit, but not sure if I am confident enough to do the job myself.

Not sure what type of mechanism you have on your 10/4 but you need a bit of free play on the pedal, only needs to be a minimal amount to be sure the thrust race clears the pressure plate. If you have free play already and the mechanism is okay its down to replacing the clutch, and i'm sure someone on the forum will no what that entails. |

I have play on pedal. I think its down to replacing the clutch. The records I have seem to indicate that this is the original clutch. Its done 122000 miles so I think its had its day

Hi spindleboy.
The original clutches are prone to slipping. The earlier type had the linings attached to the flywheel and pressure disk, with a plain plate whizzing around in-between. I can't see one of these having lasted so long.
After a miserable time with clutch-slip, I changed mine to the later, more conventional type, with the linings on the plate. I cannot believe the one of the earlier types would have lasted that long. After reconditioning mine, it lasted less than 10k miles. Even the later ones have to have stronger springs fitted to prevent slip.
Stronger springs can be obtained from the ATDC or several other suppliers of ten parts.
I seem to recall the gearbox is nice and easy to remove and replace, as the engine is mounted at the bell housing.

Don, your Chateaumobile looks in lovely condition and certainly brings back memories, one Time My Parents and I went to a campsite called "Little Switzerland" in Folkestone Kent, We went to visit some relatives who lived in Folkestone and whilst we were there there was an enourmous downpour of rain, When We got back to the Trailer tent (Which We later found out that the campsite owner should never have put us in that spot) The water was up to the step of the trailer tent and was just about to flood it!! Good Days (My Mother didn't think So She was in tears but for a young Lad like Me at the time it was an adventure!!) |
