I've been to loads of shows over the last 20 years or so. Most classic shows are the park up and walk around variety, but I do like taking part in shows that incorporate a road run, so that you can exercise your car in the company of other likeminded souls. I think these are my favourite participatory events, so long as there is an autojumble to mooch around after the run. I prefer outdoor to solely indoor events too.

As a spectator I try to get to a few historic motorsport meetings, autojumbles, and the occasional toy fair.

Events I've not tried as yet: drag racing (eg Santa Pod), hot-rod gatherings, and organised tours around the UK/abroad.

What else should I try and go to this year? and what type of events do you prefer??

For me, the highlight of each year is the August Bank Holiday NASC Nationals held at Trinity Park, near Ipswich.
Whilst it is mainly a Hot Rod event, all manner of vehicles are in attendance, including some wonderful classics.
On the Saturday there is a cruise down to Felixstowe. Usually, the cars are arriving at the seafront while more are just leaving the park.

Having said that, the people that attend can make or break an event. I have to say that the Rebel crew whom I tag along with are such a great bunch of people that nothing seems to matter - even our cruddy weather.

Last year we attended the show & cruise in Vinton Iowa and had a blast!!!
Before the cruise all the cars park around the town square and are on display for a couple hours. Vendors are also set up with food, drinks, t-shirts, etc.
Vinton has a population of about 5000 and most of the town turns out for the event.
The cruise route is a long one that travels the main street and then thru some residential areas and by the senior center where the older folks are all outside watching the cars. Then its back down main and out onto the highway for a couple miles and then back thru more residential areas and then back to main street again.
All the while the town folk are having parties in their yards as the cars cruise by.
The show starts in the late afternoon and the cruise is over by early evening.

This year we're going to try to attend more of the show & cruise events. Car shows where you just park your car for 8 hours or more just aren't for me. Cars were meant to be driven!!!Very Happy

A few pics from last year.........

As above, but we can nip home for a bath! Laughing

The Rod shows tend to be more relaxed, maybe because we camp the weekend with loads of our friends and have a blinking good weekend, especially the ones the which also have a run out somewhere.

One of the local classic car clubs organises a super show at a place called Easton Farm Park, just outside Wickham Market in Suffolk. It's usually a great day with hundreds of cars, trucks and a few hot rods and customs. Free to enter with a classic, but otherwise you pay the usual entry fee to Easton Farm Park. Shame this year it clashes with anonther show that we've said we'll go to. Sad (Anyone fancy going to Easton let me know and I'll pass on the contact details Wink )

Try to get to a 2cv club event!

The club is a very relaxed affair with most owners and club members placing the emphasis on having fun with their cars rather than getting all serious.

Every event has daft things to do like 2cv jousting, where the 'knights' stand up out of the sunroof and joust another knight in an oncoming vehicle Laughing

As you may realise 2cv owners are usually very tongue in cheek regarding their funny little cars, but have great events!

For me, it doesnt really matter. There is only one ''non-american'' show local to me, so I do try to visit that, even though for some reason the owners tend to be a bit unwilling to talk for some reason.

I enjoy the shows that combine different kinds of vehicles, eg aircraft and cars, especially if there is a dance and dinner in the evening. Due to distance here, cruising is something that is done to and from the meets for me, even though on the odd occasion I do cruise...

In my posting "Essex Events in 2008" I ave a variety of events that seem to meet all the requirements listed by the previous posters.

A 30 mile run to a static show
A display at a Country Festival
A display at a Village Fair
Two evening meets
A display at a historical site

All are open to cars, commercials, motorbikes, and two of them to classic caravans.

park up and walk around variety
We call those "Show & Shine", or "Cruise-Ins". Loads of fun. No points, no judging, no trophies, no squabbles about who did or didn`t win, or who should or shouldn`t have.
Our ULTIMATE is the annual Turkey Rod Run at the Daytona Beach Speedway. A week long show, swap meet (auto jumble?) and cruising.

We both enjoy the type of show where you can go and relax and have a good ole chinwag with people that come by. Don't go for the serious competition type stuff.

I especially love Silverstone Classic, Race Retro.
A must go in 2008: Le Mans Classic.

And Goodwood Revival:

I don't have any real favourite, I tend to enjoy anything that's related to old vehicles.

The American car scene up here in Scotland is strong, except for shows, we just don't seem to be able to get it together, especially the west coast. If I want to share time with like-minded US vehicle fans then I go over to the east coast and spend time with the guys in Fife, etc.

Certainly the highlight show for me is when we go to Florida and visit Old Town in Kissimmee. Friday nights are for 1972 (or thereabouts) onwards and Saturday night its 1972 back - some of the vehicles are just fantastic.

I visit the AACUK Summer Nationals every so often at Billing, but haven't been down there for a wee while - saving my pennies for Old Town! Cool
