I've been invited to take a vehicle to the Heskin Hall classic and steam fair at the end of May.
On the application form I found it expects me to hold Public liability insurance in order to exhibit, is this normal?

I'll attend the show but on foot in that case, if I have to pay an insurance premium to pay out for numpties not looking where they're walking I'll stay this side of the counter thank you very much.

This can be a real problem at shows, some of the exhibitors I know put down their insurers name and a ficticious policy number... it's so easy to get numbers wrong, isn't it? Wink

Cool As long as your own vehicle is insured it doesnt matter. I have been applying for events for years and the only ones who mention public liability insurance are the ones that have steam at them. I queried it at first and it only applies to the steamers for obvious reasons. Just enter your car like any other show.

That makes more sense, it is a steam fair cum classic car show and I can see the need there, but for classic cars?.
The entry form requires that I sign to confirm that I have PL and give details of my insurance company etc, I could make a 'mistake' there of course but why should I?

I think the bottom line is they want me and others to take our vehicles to an empty field in order that the public will pay to go into that field to see them, which doesn't sound sooo bad, until they want me to pay an insurance premium that I wouldn't otherwise need, bring along my vehicle at my expense, to stand as an exhibit in that otherwise empty field it seems a bit rich!

I would phone the organizer if I were you. Classic cars dont need public liability insurance. When you fill in the form for you classic car insurance you declare on it that it will be going to events. If the organizer says you need it.....tell them to get stuffed....to put it mildly.
Which brings me to my next topic.............

Wasn't there a bit about this in one of the recent FBVHC magazines?

I know that with the sue-sue society we live in today, we've all got to be extremly careful.

If you are in a car club, check to see if you are covered by their PL insurance. As long as you're not taking part in motor racing, then you should be covered. But do check, it's one of the benefits of being a club. Wink

But I thought that all events had to have PL insurance? when I was on our school's PTA, any event we did had to conply to certain rules as we were covered by the schools insurance. We borrowed some equipment from my scout troup and we had to check that would be covered. (It was and thankfully nothing happened to it.)

I would imagine all events do have to have PL insurance by law, but I would have thought the cost of that would have to be met by the shows organisers and recouped via gate sales.

This just seems like a way of passing on part of the cost of organising a show to the exhibitors and I shouldn't like to see it become accepted practice as it may harm the quality or diversity of attendees at events.

As JR said above it makes a lot of sense where steam engines are,but is it creeping into the classic car scene too?...That would be worrying.
