The mention of an engine life expectancy of 80 hours is new to me. But in context, way better than needed. The life expectancy of a Jeep in combat was 12 minutes....it was however the original 4x4, and everything else, including the Land Rover, was just a copy.
I did originally think of the Mini, after all, a lot of modern cars are built on the same concept. Front wheel drive with transverse engine.
But that in its turn brought me to the Jeep. How many people wouldnt be able to take their kids to school today if they didnt have a 4x4? |

I have a book somewhere that reveals Jeeps were built quickly and cheaply, with the engine tolerances only just good enough for an estimated 80 hours running time after which the thing could either be replaced, or more likely didn't exist any more.
The 'hours' time frame is a military way of recording use rather than miles, the same exists in aviation, engines are serviced on hours used rather than miles travelled.
As an original concept the Jeep was brilliant though. |

As a fan of the Mercedes G Wagen I don't regard the Land Rover as a viable prospect for the best of anything, I suppose at a push in ON terms everything came after the Jeep so yes I partly agree _________________ www.OldFrenchCars.com

To choose a 20th century best it means taking in too many parameters and then we need categories etc etc how about... ONE personal best and a personal reason behind it, that way its indisputable as it is a personal choice _________________ www.OldFrenchCars.com
