A few years back I saw a Ferrari 'replica' (ahemm) that had a wooden body, mounted on VW running gear. Shocking idea, but the standard of woodwork looked pretty good, especially as it hadn't been painted so you could see it all. I saw it again a few years later on eBay, all painted up in red in a half-ar$ed attempt to make it look like an F40

I like that, I love wood, think it is a more useable material than metal. I don't think that I would aspire to make a wooden car from scratch though, while I was at college one of the other more basic engineering course involved making a car from scratch. Being a agricultural college, it turned out to be a huge thing, made of some real heavy steel, but it worked and drove, but the car was cut up before anyone had the chance to make a body!
