I don't know if any of you guys use your cars for weddings, but I do and I have the correct hire and reward insurance to go with it. Every year at this time my phone dose not stop ringing because it is School Prom season. For the kids it is "how you arrive" that is important and many want the most unusual form of transport they can find. Limo's are old hat now, (if you can get one). they want something different, such as my New York Taxi and the NYPD cop car I had. It is so frustrating to tell them "Sorry can't do it".
Most authorities allow you to do weddings (and funerals ) but for anything else you require "Special Event Licensing". The cost with some authorities is as low as £200 for the year, which is not too bad. But my local authority want £1200 the first year and £600+ every year after.
The vehicle has to be licensed. I have to have an operators license and a drivers license. Oh! and £25 for a English language test Simple maths tells you that with the very small number of Proms, you are not going to break even, let alone make a profit.

I did ask my authority, how come I can do weddings and the reply was "Because how you arrive and in what, is part of the occasion". Doh! and a prom is different?

If those rules applied here, it would create chaos. Every year at graduation time, school leavers are picked up in special vehicles. Everything from european and american classics, to lorries....even the police turn a blind eye!

After posting I Googled "Special Event Licensing" and found that one council charge a fee of £87 for a license

A friend's daughter wanted a special vehicle to take her and friends to her prom and decided an Ice Cream Van would be different.

Then the regulations kicked in - only one passenger could be carried, Ice Creams could not be sold (but could be given away), chimes could only be rung before a certain time and so on.

But it seems fire engines, routemaster busses and armoured personnel carriers are popular.

The problem, DH, seems to be the Hire and Reward element, if you own a suitable vehicle and take it to a prom full of "friends & family" surely you are insured and nobody can stop you.

Hire and reward may be the clue here.

Now if you were to take them to the event and they made a donation to you, to pay for fuel etc........

I had a meeting with Birmingham City Licensing people and after they informed me about the fee's, I asked how many "Special Event Vehicle Licenses" had they issued?

ONE !!! was I surprised? not really at £1200 a throw. So in a city the size of Birmingham, realistically you cannot hire an unusual prom vehicle.

Perhaps I should move to The Borough of King's Lynn and West Norfolk where the license fee is £87.00
