Dean dropped me a line, it shows his father in law on an old 'bike in 1943, but he can't remember what it was - can anyone id this one???

The chain cover suggests a Triumph. Possibly a 1937 T80.

Agree, it's almost certainly a Triumph.The primary drive cover is typical of their 1930's design.....mind you, it's pretty typical, period!
Model? Don't know. Try Tragasch for reference.
