I have a great interest in pictures of classic commercials working for their living in the days when that's what they were intended for. As you know my particular interest is the Jowett Bradford. A friend in New Zealand recently sent me the attached picture of his father's Bradford working in about 1950. Note the "road" condition!
Anyone else got anything similar?

Hi Paul,
I can't find a photo but there is a Mr Purves here in Edinburgh who has rather nice lamp shop and for quite a number of years he used to take a stall at Beaulieu Autojumble travelling down the 450 miles in his blue Bradford van that he used as everyday transport. Unfortunately I haven't seen his van for a couple of years now. I hope he's still got it.

Peter, I can confirm that Bill still has the Bradford, but he has has some issues recently. They had a major accident on the M6 heading for Beaulieu several years ago and the van was totalled. I recovered it for him from a salvage yard in Dumfries where it went for insurance assessment. Eventually the insurers settled and Bill bought the salvage including the number. subsequently Roger Young - Bradford enthusiast from Leominster totally rebuilt it and it is back on the campaign trail. From memory it took a second in the concours at our National Rally last month, in Crieff (second to one of Roger's vehicles!!). Bill does not enjoy the best of health these days, but still runs the lamp emporium on a semi-hobby basis.
I am overdue to post some pictures from Crief. I will look out one of Bill's Bradford and post soon!

Hi Paul,
Thanks for the update on the Purves van. It's nice to hear that it has been rescued from its unfortunate accident. I look forward to your show pics.
Thanks,
Peter |

I promise to post soon! Peter. I may even be able to find the pictures from Dumfries which are a sad sight!
Thanks Rick, there must be a book oppportunity for such pictures. Sadly so many small vans were taken for granted in their working days that no one ever photo'd them. My dad ran 2 Jowetts for his business, but I do not believe that pictures of either exist! |

I well remember this van from some of my first Beaulieu visits. Followed him off the site once in my Minor van, heavily loaded with goodies and camping gear, through the New Forest and remember thinking that he'd got a really long journey ahead and that it put my late night trek back up to Sheffield into perspective... Did manage to out horsepower him and bumble past on a really long straight, I seem to recall.
It was a cheering sight though, glad he and van are still about.
