Within a couple of days of passing the big 70 I received the insurance renewal notice for my “Modern” (Sharp intake of breath.)
Anyone know what the position is re’ insurance for old gits. If I change from my present company that specializes in ‘stumblies’ insurance, but is expensive. Would another company be likely to withdraw cover when I reach 75 or 80?

Hi Don,

This doesn't really answer your question but it might suggest other places to try:

"Help the Aged and Age Concern both market policies that have no upper maximum age. Cornhill only accepts new policyholders up to 84 but if you've been insured by them for a few years, there's no upper age limit. RIAS and Saga are also pleased to consider older drivers. As the price of car insurance is based on historical claims experience, a 75 year old male driver can expect to pay at least 33% more than if he were aged 50. By the time the driver reaches 80 the premiums hit boy racer levels! So if you're in your early 50's keep smiling at the lowest premiums you'll ever experience - they won't last forever!"

Many thanks Peter, I'm with Saga at the moment so I might as well stay with them if this age loading is unavoidable. Thank goodnes my three classic car policies with Boncaster don't seem to be subject to the same excesses... or have I got that to come?

I remember my dad had real trouble insuring the Morris Minor when he got older.

a) becasue it was classed as a modified vehicle (brake servo, anti roll bar and telescopic shocks!)

b) the age thing

When he last was driving he could only get TPFT, what really anoyed him was that he had been with the same inurance company for over 50 years and only ever claimed for windscreens!

Welcome to my problems, I am at the other end of the scale, but it is silly, my "friends" laugh about how many accidents they have had, but it is costing me money!
