Further to my piece in the introduction page, this was an article I wrote regarding the work carried out to the Rolls Royce Avon engines on the English Electric Canberra, which is based at Coventry

http://www.airsceneuk.org.uk/oldstuff/2007/415aacf/canberra.htm

Unfortunately, one of the engines suffered a blade failure as it was being brought up to full power, which is 7.800 rpm, prior to take off for an air display last year. This resulted in the engine suffering major damage. One good thing was that it occurred before the take off roll had started ,because if it had failed before the safe single engine operating speed of 140 knots had been reached, the only option would be to land ahead or eject and as the ejection seats fitted in the aircraft are not zero-zero seats as fitted to more modern aircraft, they require a certain speed and altitude to be attained before they will operate succesfully. The consequences of that for crew and aircraft do not bear thinking about.
We are still awaiting the results of the investigation into why the blade failed, either fatigue or debris ingress.
At the time of writing, we have not been successful in obtaining a RR Avon MK109 with the necessary paperwork, so the aircraft is currently grounded. Very disappointing for the small band of volunteers who have worked wonders in keeping a piece of our aviation heritage where it belongs, in the air!
