Hi

I have just finished 5 hours of subsoiling, by gom, some of it was like concrete! hehe

Use half a tank of Diesel, (a full tank took 30 - 45 mins to fill up!) Tractor was working hard!

Good fun though! Whats more it was an oldish tractor! Very Happy

Cheers

Dave

Hi

The combine came today for the wheat, was a little late, about 6 hours! hehe

It was a bit dry to combine, can anyone exlain why we would want the wheat wetter than it is at the moment?

Cheers

Is it because too much grain is lost? I've noticed more birds amongst the straw lately, presumably eating the grain which was shaken loose by the cutter?

Hi

The reason for grain being spat out with the straw is basically due to the combine being set up/opperated incorrectly. You may see green shoots growing in the stuble or in bales that have got damp, this is another sign.

The reason for us wetting the grain is to make it easier to digest as cattle food. The thory is to dump it in a pile, I think it was due to be about 80 ton, then wet it down put it in the feed waggon, mix with urea tablets, and seal under visqueen, like silage. Leave it for a months and then when it is opened the water and urea have reacted to make the outer cornel soft, making the cows able to digest more of it, and save it being expelled as roughage!

Cheers

Somebody painted a picture called 'The Gleaners' can't remember who (I sat at the back in art class) they could still do it if there was a dodgy combine driver. Guess my theory as to why some farmers make silage (you won't like it if you are a silage maker though)
