Just came by this promo photo of a Morris 8. The 2 people in the photo must be either under the age of 10 or are midgets with the front seats unbolted as they are far to far back! all to create the illusion of a bigger car
I doubt manufacturer's would get away with it these days!

Brings back memories of Rick's posting from William Morris's biggest competitor showing a family who are legless in one sense or the other:

Well now that is a 4 door Morris Eight series 1 1934-37 which was quite rare most of the saloons being 2 doors.
As the body was otherwise the same it did have extremely short front doors making it quite hard to enter and the seat backs were indeed well to the rear of the B posts.
Because your head was against the rear window it did have surprisingly quite good legroom in the back , superior to modern cars of the same overall length , if with a good deal less safety margin when hit from behind.
True I think the artists impression makes it look rather more RR like in the back there. I did own one (indeed all the 8 variants) a long time ago.
It was quite an impressive bit passenger accommodation. _________________ Richard |

Look at adverts for BMC in the 1950s. Morris Cowleys, Oxfords and Isis all driven by 'the little people'. You could almost imagine one of them saying: 'Take me by Morris Oxford.' I instead of 'Take me by The Flying Scotsman.' Which as I'm sure everybody knows was a famous LNER poster. _________________ To Hell with ambition, it drives a man mad, I can scarcely wake up to be fed. |

American ads were worse; even given the excesses of the '50's and '60's, lots of artistic license was applied in non-photograhic ads. GM's cars looked ten feet wide....
and this trend is not dead! i suspect that the cute chick in the current Mercury SUV commercials is actually about 4'9" tall at the most..... she makes a tiny SUV look like the QE2 inside.
of course, squeezing a modern, overfed office worker into a Seven would probably require chiropractic later, if not a trip to casualty. |

The vicar has got a new Austin.
But he finds it a trifle exhausting,
His legs and his knees go in with a squeeze,
But his stomach just has to be forced in. _________________ To Hell with ambition, it drives a man mad, I can scarcely wake up to be fed. |

Does anyone remember the TV ads when Ford introduced the Mk1 Capri?
Two young women piled into the back, followed by two athletic looking young men in the front quicker than you could fall off a bike. I wonder how long they practiced that?
I'm not trying to malign the Mk1 Capri - I always wanted one. But to use as a two seater. |
