Paul, not quite true. The Renault 16 pre-dated the Maxi by about 5 years, did it not?
And the Austin A40 farina Countryman?

mm not sure the A40 counts as it had a split tailgate (although I think possibly the Innocenti-built A40 may have had a one piece job?). How about the Renault 4, is that a one piece top hinged door, or side hinged like a van?

I used to like Top Gear but for Supposed 'Motoring enthusiasts' they seem to show very little regard for anything older than a few months or anything under 1000 Bhp!!
I would love for another Motoring programme to come along and be more popular than Top Gear, one that would encompass all types of Motoring from all ages and be enthusiastic about it rather than intent on ridiculing or destroying it.
But given the huge amounts of money the BBC have to throw at it, I can't see it happenning Rolling Eyes
Rant over! Very Happy Very Happy

Well don't rely on that "fact" if it's the final question on "Who Wants to be a Millionaire" because there are several cars that have a hatchback body style and pre-date the Maxi. Confused

My own 1958 Aston Martin DB Mk III has a tailgate and fold down rear seats so is a hatchback, as was of course the E-Type Coupe; who could forget the iconic sideways opening tailgate on those? At the opposite end of the spectrum the Austin A40 MkII was a hatchback, I should know I used to have one! I was keyboard player in a band and it was used to transport my electric piano, organ, amplifier and assorted cables which it did easily. Dreadful car and I used my MGA on all occasions other than band nights but it was jolly useful! Laughing

Hi Paul
I thought A40's all had folding rear seats, but most only had the drop down bootlid/tailgate and only the countryman had an upward opening rear window as well making it more like a proper estate car.

The 1100 had a couple of coach built variants with folding rear seats Crayford did a split rear tailgate and a Somerset company, Creech Motors, did a single rising hatch conversion called the Mystique.

also Friary did a hatchback conversion on the 105E Anglia, retaining the fins, before Ford got round to developing an estate.

Here's one like I had, note the hinges top and bottom, as you say the tailgate was split in the middle...

Well if the Farina A40 is a "hatchback" I'll have to submit an earlier A40 for consideration too... Wink

Seriously though, I think the first true hatchback may have been a Citroen.
I can't seem to find a picture of it but I'm sure I've seen a pre-traction saloon with a single top hinged rear door. It was described as a salesman's car or some such title.

Then again maybe I'm not remembering correctly..

I beg to differ,Paul. The Renault 16 preceded the Maxi by several years.
Fwiw, here in nz,the Maxi had a bad reputation for shaking itself to pieces on our poor roads.Mind you,so did plenty of other cars of it's era.A lady across the road had one for at least 10 years, and carried her 5 kids without complaint. The only problem was the gear change cable stretching,or worse, breaking.Other than that,it did an admirable job for her and her family.

Peter, the Rosalie clearly has the hinges on the bottom of the panel. There was a Citroen model with a side hinged rear door, but iirc it was bigger than the rosalie.I have apic of it somewhere, but finding it could be a problem Laughing

Hi Poodge,

Yes I know my Rolsalie picture isn't what I had in mind. I'm sure I've seen a photo of a Citroen similar to the Rosalie but with a single top hinged rear door.
