A couple of photos I took before re fitting them, these r now re fitted and as already said before have turned my attention to cleaning well and painting the underside.
Springs cleaned, rust threated and painted in satin black
One damper housing ready cleaned, rust threated and also painted satin black whilst the other one was due to receiving the same treatment after photo was taken

Looking good both your job, and your friends pickup. You can see more inhere http://www.showcars.dk/ but these are more than a year old before all the latest finishing touches. |

the mk 1 S seems to have had a re shell with a later mk 3 onwards shell isnt it?
but its still very nice, do u race it in hillclimbs?
how do you find the quickshift? I was thinking of putting one on mine some day together with straight cut gears!! |

Yes you did spot it its a MK III shell with modifications to make it look right.
I do race it in Hillclimbs, as its to expensive for me to go track racing,
they charge entry fee, for car/driveer, and then the spectators must pay also to come see could you imagine the Circus horses should pay to go in the arena? I dont think so
The quickshift is ok after I put the gearshift inside the car, and fixed it solid to the floor, but I was not to happy when it was sitting in its rubbers, under the car--much better now
I just bought a vuf vuf box on Ebay, its a JKD brand new, dont know when I put it in? but I hope it will suit the car, and be close between 2nd and 3rd _________________ http://www.eurods.eu/wp/index.html |

Oh if u say it wasnt great before hand than its not for me as I dont want it sitting in the car!!!!
However the straight cut is still appealing, I love the sound it makes!!
However that means taking the engine out again and either dismantling the gearbox or else but one ready assembled and just bolt it on but that means much more cash!!!
I have my hands full at the moment so that'll have to wait surely!!
My surf blue is a mark 4 which I am gradually turning into a mark 1 lookalike, still need the rear lights blanking plates though, havén't bought them yet!!
However I have all the rest!!
How did u fix the outer hinges, are they just cosmetical or functional?! |

What year is the Hunter. My first car was a Hillman Hunter in the same blue as yours which cost me £161 (in 1984). It was an unutterable piece of junk with leaks everywhere, and oxidised paint holding the rusting panels together. The clutch release bearing squealed so badly I drove it without using the clutch including coasting up to traffic lights and killing the engine before starting it up in 1st as they changed to green.
I loved it _________________ Richard |

Forgot to add
They were known for the steering wheel coming off rather easily - best check that before test driving _________________ Richard |

Hi mine is a 1970 model a deluxe!!
hehe must have been fun then driving it, no good over here though with the traffic we have and junctions everywhere u'd be stalling the engine every minute!!!
thanks for the tip on the steering wheel, I'll check it but it has never happened when it belonged to my father in law.
I am concerned on the steering box though cause its making a couple of strange noises and theres some play, will have to take it out and inspect but I've no idea how to do it cause I've always had rack and pinion on all of my cars!!
do u remember the name of that blue, on my logbook its written as mtahleb blue (mtahleb is a country village in malta). BTW this hunter is a Malta car assembly pproduct ie it was imported as a ckd (complete knock down) kit and assembled over here.
Its shared the same factory as austin and morrises 1100s, minis, triumphs etc!! |

I had a Minx with a recirculating ball steering box, if that is what this is and you notice occasional clicks and/or intermittent stiffening of the steering beware.
I had that on a trip once and as I turned in to a carpark the wheel suddenly spun in my hands without any cotrol of the front wheels.
All the balls in the nut had finally come out.
I had to leave the car there, source new nut and balls and then rebuilt it later that week on the car park,
It would be far easier to do it at home in a garage.
This is not vehicle specific but is a generic diagram of a recirculating ball box.

Thought it about time for an update!!
Have been working on the engine bay lately, decided to sand down the lower part since it was not done well and leave the upper part then blend in with the paint.
Dismantled many of the parts but left the engine in situ.
Have cleaned the carb side of the engine and also sanded down the same side of the engine bay starting from 80 and ending with 400 grade. Have put on some rust inhibitor for now & will be painting with primer, filler, and the 2 pack blue when the other side will be ready, which should be by tomorrow!!
Then paint the engine, change the sump and top cover gasket cause both leak a bit and then start refitting the ancillaries like radiator, dynamo etc that I took off.
Already refurbished the dynamo, and have taken the rad to a specialist who cleaned the chores and changed the upper tank which was shot!!
I am at present doing the starter and when thats ready will sand down the rad and spray it and carry on with the servo etc!!
Also have painted the air filter housing, water pump pulley, metal fan and horns (stripped and painted).
The engine bay before I started sanding down, note radiator, pulley, dynamo and air filter box were already dismantled.
Some of the bits mentioned ready for re fitting
The offending thermostat housing mentioned in another post in the mecahnical section on the forum (Its now lying on my work bench)
The radiator before taking it to the specialist, note the shot upper tank all bubbled up paint was actually rust holes!!
