What are the views of people's opinions of those repro period tax discs you can get? I'm tempted to stick a 1958 one on my car but not sure if it's a bit naff? Thoughts Confused

I don't think they are naff, so long as they are in a suitably period tax disc holder of course Smile

Although I am a little biased - I got one for the A40. The only problem is that it seems to have faded a little, which I thought was a bit surprising given how infrequently it is outside. It's been in the car no more than 18mths-2 years. Original discs from the 40s still look quite fresh even after several decades. I guess different sellers print them in different ways, some better than others? Confused it did however come with a second disc as a spare, so I'll probably pop that one in the car.

I still have every tax disc for my 1800 from its registration in 1969 - so I can use its original one. Must get a period tax disc holder though.

I have a 1947 disc on the Rover although the car was built in Dec 1947. Had I fitted a 1948 disc as it should have displayed then I would get questioned why it has a 1948 disc on a 1947 car Shocked

My mate went through this at every rally he attended and eventually bought a disc the same year his car was built

I would keep the 48 disc and have the great delight in telling every pedantic twit that they are wrong.

Your December 47 car could never have had a 47 disc, and I love the look on their faces when you politely correct their mistakes.

I love the idea... but my worry is where to instal it, because the current tax disc has to go in the same place. Having the old and new side-by-side is a bit obvious and makes the windscreen cluttered. How have others solved this dilemma?

hi
I have noticed a lot of owners only put up the period disks when at a show and off the road.

The rule is actually on the left hand side of the windscreen not that it must be in the bottom LH corner.
I have kept my disk in the top left hand corner before now so you could put an period one down at the bottom.

My current modern has it at the bottom but it does look crowded in that corner alongside my ADI and Fleet Instructors badges which the law does require to be down there so I think I'm going to move it back to the top corner.
If you have a tinted strip you have to be careful though because although you can see out through them you can't read a disk through them.

Ha ha... I thought of that too... fortunatly my car was registered, and first taxed, in December 1958 for one month, then taxed again in January 59 for a year, so I could display a Dec 58 disc... or a Dec 59 if I wanted:D

Personally I love these discs but I've never bought one for my own cars.

I love the idea of 'period' stickers too, especially supplying dealer ones and marque marketing things.

Esso tiger tails are often seen but does anyone have the twin horseshoes for Gulf NO-Knox petrol? Their anti pinking 5 star AIRC.

I've had mine on the car for about 15 years now and the holder is transparent on both sides so I keep the correct one facing inwards. Once had a traffic warden with a sense-of-humour bypass telling me I had a lot of back tax to pay. The disc is 1961 by the way.
