after peering under my mini, i noticed a fair bit of surface rust (no holes thankfully). i am going to be treating as much ot the car as i can. my plan is to paint the underside of the car (and subframe) with hammerite underseal with added waxoyl (the stuff in a red and black tin). then for all the nooks and hidyholes, i have bought some general waxoyl for a compressed air shultz gun. i am planning to coat the suspension and wheel arches with this
does this sound ok? oh and what preperation is needed before waxoyling/undersealing?
many thanks |

Hi I would treat the rust and pint with primer and topcoat first.Using waxoyl on rusty metal just hides it. Regards Kels |

Some years ago I was told that as waxoyl contains silicones you should never apply it before respraying as cellulose reacts with the silicone.
Is this true?
And does 2 pack or water based paint react in the same way? _________________ Brian

Yes, every sort of paint can suffer silicone contamination, known in the trade as 'fish-eyes', little craters in the paint surface.
Thats why the cleaned primer is wiped with a 'prep-sol' or spirit-wipe to remove these surface contaminants, but often with silicone contamination that's not enough. Indeed someone using a silicone polish or spray in the vicinity can ruin a paintjob as the contaminant has become airborne.
A silcone additive can be added to the paint to make it flow better if there has been a previous silicone reaction (the fish-eyes). _________________ 2000 Jaguar XJ8 4.0 LWB

hey thats the inside of my mini back togeather. i found kurust was quite useful, coated in that stuff first, repaired the odd hole, painted in straight to rust paint, foot wells were coated in tetroseal then a final coat of waxoyl. the interior looks brand new |
