I'd say tidy up and drive. She looks very sound. I've always had a soft spot for the Austin counties range, lovely cars and I've got fond memories of the A40 Somerset we used to have. How is your first gear? Ours used to be a b****** to select! _________________ Richard Hughes |

A few more pics As you can see the sun has played hell with all the rubber and plastic. But given a choice , sun or salt (from the roads during winter) then give me sun everytime ! I plan to get the master and brake cylinders re-sleeved with stainless steel. And then put her in for MOT and see what it needs...... I will keep you posted "MO"

Mo,
New rubbers for the A70 should not be a problem. If you have difficulties in the UK, then give this mob a go.

I have used them and they have heaps of Austin stuff!!

As I want to try and get an MOT on my pick-up I think I may need some extra lighting on the rear ? The red lights are only reflectors and I dont like the 1970s indicators. So can anybody let me know what would be suitable replacements or perhaps what type of lights lights were standard on the Hereford saloon of the time . thanks in advance "MO"

Hey Mo,
The guy you bought the car from is facing a fine as he hasn't handed the number plates back to Plodd!! There again, if it hasn't been licenced since 2002, perhaps he's already paid it!!

Rick that sounds like a good idea , I think I have seen it done before on Green and black A70 UNO. I did not realize that those lamps were stop/tail lamps. I have done a bit of a search online and found some, but I may wait till Beulieu autojumble to pick them up (If prices are competitive). I have also found the indicators that I intend to use front and back to replace those 1970s Hella things. I have nothing against trafficators but modern drivers just dont see em , and my mate with his VW has "come close" a few times. I will have the trafficators working though. Rick did you get those pics of the A40s I sent ? They have been collected now , so perhaps they may hit the market soon or turn up on the show scene ?
Keith , I am not sure about SA rego rules or return of plates. I do know that , that is not the utes original number and I am trying hard to find out just what it was. I was told the Rego office wanted $600 to rego the ute with the old number and so the bloke let the plates go. (Bloody shame really). I do know the bloke I bought it off wont be too worried about the non return of the plates because...... It was,nt Registered in his name "MO" _________________ A vehicle can be restored at any time, But is original only once ! |

Can anybody please confirm (or otherwise )that Herefords (ute,s at least) had Blue painted Chassis and running gear ? The reason I ask is that a mate of mine is starting the restoration of the 52 Ute I sold him and has found signs of much Blue on the above mentioned parts. On looking at my 51 Pick-up it seems that my one was indeed painted blue (same colour as the engine ?) Any thoughts or info welcome "MO"
Oh yes , found the name of JARROW ENGLAND on the inside of the rear bumper and a Pic of the Lucas lights I got at Beaulieu being fitted and wired in. "MO" _________________ A vehicle can be restored at any time, But is original only once ! |

Its a legal requirement in the UK to have 2 rear red reflectors on that age of car - safety sensible too _________________ Rover P2

Hello Rick , well good news ! it now has an MOT , The brakes have been refurbished (new pads , master cylinder and all brake cylinders ) drums skimmed , petrol tank doesnt leak now and its running ok (thanks for your help Dave). But ... there is still more to do yet ! I had a bit of luck with some tyres ( see other thread) and they look great. I think the next thing I should do is a new loom and re wiring just to be on the safe side. I am looking for windscreen rubbers (front and back) which it needs badly. I am thinking perhaps I may leave the exterior just as it is ? A cut and polish followed by the ANKOR wax I mentioned in another thread. The inside is another story and I think eventually I may have it totally retrimmed in time. I Still welcome contact from any other A70 owners to perhaps share info or ideas , Will keep you posted , cheers for now "MO"

Cant believe I started this thread so long ago... Anyway my Ute is now on the road. It does need a few more bits doing to it but at least its all registered , taxed , mot,d and insured and I was lucky enough to find a number plate for it that I just could not let pass bye and that seemed so appropriate......
and have a look here too...
